Have you checked out extra long twins beds?

I agree - extra long twin beds. You can then send this bedding with him to college as that is what they all have these days.

I have used a regular bed headboard across a corner....just put a floor lamp behind it and no problem....yes to extra long twin bed.

Sorry, I think I wasn't clear. I'm familiar with twin extra-long mattresses, but I don't want to go that route - I want to get a full (double) bed for my son. He currently has two separate twin beds in his room, so there will be plenty of room to do a larger bed.

Are you a bit handy? I think that headboard look could be easily created. Two upholstered pieces of plywood (with legs) held together in the corner with L-brackets.

Could you get two upholstered headboards (a full and a queen or king) and bolt them together at the corner?

Also, if he's already 5'7", you might want to get him a queen instead! Sounds like he's going to be tall and will appreciate the extra length before long.

but I agree with everyone...I for example am going to put my DD's new full bed along the wall(for that matter decided to go with no headboard), and put pillows in the corner. She has kantha throw for summer, and faux fur throw for winter..will look cool

DS will get "adult looking" daybed, but twin size. Will look a bit like a sofa-I went with upholstered back and arms, to make it comfier.

Does the daybed have upholstered arms at the head and foot? If so, it may end up being cramped for him. Twins are only 72" long; he's already 67" tall (and slightly longer when he's lying down), so that only gives him 5" of clearance ... and he's hitting that growth spurt age!

I would get a full size mattress and a bed frame with locking wheels. Then make 2 panels with plywood and padding and attach them to the wall in the corner. When you have to make the bed, unlock the wheels, pull the bed out from the wall, change sheets and push back. I agree that he'll outgrow a daybed with arms on both ends.

Thanks so much for all the ideas! I'm a little skittish about anything DIY; I've seen the Pinterest tutorials but I've got a long list of projects that need to be done whereas this one seems like something I should shop for! @aprilneverends, I love all those ideas - if only I could afford one of those cool RH beds (of course if I could, I would probably have a house with ginormous rooms for kids and this wouldn't be a concern.)

@lilysroom & @robo & @chibimini - you have me thinking hard about the right bed size. He's the tallest kid in his school and while that may taper off eventually it's a decent bet he'll be over 6' at minimum. So the length of a queen bed might be more sensible. We had one in there when it was a guest room (pre kid #2) and his other furniture is pretty slim so I'm sure I could fit one.

We're putting hardwood floors upstairs in the next month, so my hope is try to coordinate this and minimize the amount of furniture the guys have to move as they install. This is his messy day-before-school starts room; the other wall has a very shallow, tall bookshelf:

Has he requested a larger bed? I would definitely have that conversation with him. Does he make his own bed? If so, he might have an opinion about what it means when that bed is pushed all the way into the corner. Will a second bed in the same room still be needed? Such that you/he should be looking for a trundle situation? I am not much of a do it yourself or a but I really do like IKEA, he made too...?

As a wife with a 6'5" husband, definitely consider buying a queen mattress instead of a full. A full mattress is not longer than a twin, only wider, meaning as he grows he will have to angle his legs diagonally when he sleeps. A queen mattress is both longer and wider which will be more comfortable for him long term. We have a king bed now (just upgraded from a queen a couple of months ago) and it's great having the extra width with two of us in the bed, but ideally my husband needs a California King which is a little longer...but he makes it work since we gained extra width).

I've never even seen corner headboards like you're looking for so that's all new to me! I'd just make your own out of plywood, foam, and fabric...no sewing required. We made our own queen headboard several years ago and it was very simple and inexpensive! I even tufted it. :)
