Also, is it best to water house plants from below or top?
Comments (5)most mixes straight from the shop will bottom wick, as they contain largely peat, which wicks easily. but if you let it sit too much - it might absorb too much water. peat needs to be cut with perlite roughly by 25-30% , so as not to get water-logged. if the mix is coir peat however, it will not get water-logged, even though coir-peat actually absorbs a little more water then reg peat. but it maintains air-spaces even when wet - so the roots can still have air. IF your mix contains coarser coir pellets (chips) - they maintain as much air-space if not more then bark. they wick up very well too, but bark does not wick. so if your mix contains mostly bark (more then 50%) - it will wick some but poorly, only the bottom layer (which is usually the wettest anyway). for bottom-wicking in general the 1:1:1 ratio of bark/peat/perlite is recommended (see raybo mixes for example)....See MoreBest way to water plants growing from moss?
Comments (1)ZR, This may be better answered in the Bonsai Forum. Look up the growing perimeters for the tropical begonia and the walking mangrove. They may not be compatible is my guess. The Bonsai forum may have members that can explain the details of caring for this bonsai setup. Aloha...See Morebest way to 'cut' those square red/gray pavers from home depot
Comments (8)Pick up an Angle Grinder. HD or Harbor Freight sell them for less than $20. The grinding blade that comes with them is for grinding steel and won't work on concrete. Next pick up a diamond blade for the grinder. They are suprisingly cheap and are for dry cuts. You don't use water with the blades! HD sells various grades of diamond blades for grinders and as recall they are only $10 or so. I remove the shield from the grinder because I usually use a 4" blade on my 3" grinder. WEAR EYE PROTECTION and a mask because you will have a lot of dust. If I recall correctly the diamond blades for grinders come in 3" and 4" blades depending on the size needed for your grinder. If you get the 3" grinder you can actually use a 4" blade with it so long as you remove the shield. The larger blade will ensure you have a enough blade to cut all the way through without having to flip the paver over to cut through the opposite side. I often use the angle grinder equipped with the diamond blade to cut through red clay brick but I have also cut through concrete several times with the same blades....See Morewatering while away from home
Comments (4)*Water Grabber*, and I think you could get it at Home Depot or even Walmart in the garden section. You just soak it in water and add it to the soil. Since the holidays are coming they might not have as much garden stuff out and you might have to order that online though. Or you could get some of those glass things you put water in and stick in the pots, if you don't want to disturb the soil. They have them at the dollar stores and drug stores now. Some plants of mine did fairly well when I went away placed in a tray of pebbles with water. (But I left them in zone 4)...See Moreworthy
