Nikita'S Gift seeded with out a male tree
Comments (22)Tony, maybe on D. virginiana can Steiermark survive lower temperatures, mine is grafted on D. lotus rootstock. people often grow here Tipo (variety from Italy), Rojo Brillante (Spain), but we have some local selections, like Dunaj persimmon (Danube) or Kavkaz. Because Ukraine is not so far, Rosseyanka, Nikita Gift are available very often in nurseries. Now the third generation selections of NG offsprings with bigger fruits (200-250 g) are becoming more popular - varieties Gora Goverla, Gora Rodgers, Roman Kos with hardiness down to -5 F...It s good to continue with NG seedlings selection. I like NG - very sweet fruits and attractive colour of riped fruits.......See MoreAnthurium jenmanii.....what's going on with this one?
Comments (31)Please don't shoot me for this! But that last question is truly an interesting one! This is an email from Dr. Tom Croat, America's top aroid botanist at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. Dear Denis: There has not been anything published since I published my revision of Anthurium sect. Pachyneurium in the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden 78(3): 539-855.1991. The attractive, coriaciaceous bird's nest sometimes called "jenmanii" sometimes A. bonplandii guayanum, sometimes as A. guayanum had the young leave reddish on the lower surface when young. I treated this as Anthurium bonplandii ssp. guyanum but it might just as easily be considered a distinct species as was treated by George Bunting. It is just that there is so much variation in all of those taxa that I could not find clear separation in them. Certainly this plant did not have anything really in common with A. jenmannii, a species which has a spathe that soon withers and falls off. Dr Tom Croat, Missouri Botanical Garden The email was not sent to me but was forwarded to me by Denis Rotolante at Silver Krome Gardens in Miami. Dr. Croat sent the message to Denis. In case you don't understand, Dr. Croat is saying the plant with the purple/red leaf is not Anthurium jenmanii as everyone now thinks. The plant that produces the purple/red leaf is actually Anthurium bonplandii subsp. guyanum. So what does that mean? It just means you need to change the tag on your plant if you have the Anthurium from the Guiana Shield that produces the new leaf that is purple. The mistake apparently happened as a result of a plant photograph taken at an International aroid Show in Miami of a plant with a bad name tag. That bad name has stuck. But according to Dr. Croat, the plant with the purple/red leaf is not Anthurium jenamanii as everyone seems to think. Comments (2)How pretty! It is an Anthurium and the species andraeanum, also sometimes spelled andreanum, commonly called Flamingo Flower or Tail Flower. Yours is one of thousands of cultivars of this pretty blooming species. It has become one of my favorite plants. They like to be kept warm, moist (but not soggy, wet!) and in bright, indirect sunlight. In those conditions, they will grow pretty fast and bloom almost year-round. Hot, humid conditions are best. I keep all of mine outside under oak trees and crape myrtle trees in shifting/dappled sunlight and they love it. I bring them inside during threat of frost or freeze... and they aren't crazy about nights where the temp drops below 50 either. Some cultivars will throw yellow leaves or drop them. Those come inside, too. See lots of information at the link below. Good luck with your new, awesome plant! Carol in Jacksonville PS. I went to your "My Page" to see where you are located and it says Zone 8... but your zone above says 9a. Maybe you moved? Comments (34)We did not do much in the way of gifts this year but we did go to my neighbors home for Christmas dinner and we always exchange gifts. She has no family to buy for other than her husband and her dogs so she has started showering us with Christmas gifts because she enjoys it so much. I try to reciprocate. She is an avid gardener and works in my yard all the time. She often gets into poison ivy. I got her the very best quality leather gauntlet gardening gloves I could find in her tiny hand size. She was so thrilled. She said oh my God no more poison ivy on my wrist. I also bought them a Cajun pork Tenderloin wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cream cheese and jalapeños. She cooked it for their new years eve meal last night and said it might be the best thing they have had. That made me happy....See Morehobbyartisan (Saskatoon, SK Canada, 2b)
