I'd probably try moving the switch but that's why I blow budgets

I would short both and balance it all the way around.

I had the same problem and ended up moving the switch.

I would not want the trim to be so wide that there were just small strips of painted drywall in between the window and door trims. I would probably rather have smaller trim around both the door and the windows to avoid a too-crowded look.

Move the switch. Not a big deal, usually.

I agree with Corlett, I don't think you need any window trim - looks nice and clean the way it is.

You can find narrow or round switch plates that may fit your needs. Easier than rewiring or compromising on trim. I found them online, sorry I don't have the name of the vendor.

Geoffrey: It's not nice and clean, I've got ragged drywall edges showing that I need to cover up. I've lined the insides of the jambs, but still need casing.

Ragged drywall edges: Just get some outside corner bead and finish them off. IMO you're making a lot of work for your self.

I doubt you'd have to remove the existing sills; just butt to them, Bondo, sand, and paint. Veneer over the joint if it makes you feel better.

You can get switch plates as skinny as 1.5". Would that make enough of a difference?

geoffrey: I need wood trim to match the aesthetic in the rest of the house. No drywall returns on the windows.

joe: How would you attach the extension to the sills? Biscuit? countersunk screws? There are currently just 2 finish nails per board holding them in, so it's a quick sawzall cut and pop them out. But I do hate wasting all those short pieces.

fori: the box behind the outlet is a 2x4, so a narrower switch plate cover wouldn't hide it fully.

I replaced two window sills so far. They were only attached to the apron, so it was easy to pull them out from under the window after cutting all the caulk. They were installed by the builder in the early 1980s. I think building a new sill (stool?) is easier than extending an existing line cleanly.

If you want to keep the drywall, I would just top align a wide top piece to make it level with the door, an put a similar wide apron at the bottom. You could add a thin 1" trim to the sides if you like. I have a design similar to the one you want, however I added an extruded trim piece to top and sides. You could do just the extruded trim piece on the sides and still stay consistent with your plans for whole house window trim. There are several ways you can vary that style and have the perception of consistency.

The thin drywall pieces are a pain to paint, especially a contrasting color with 3/4" or deeper casing.

An alternative is to wainscot the whole wall up to the top of the door casing, and design trim to integrate the outlet. You can get an extension box to pull the outlet out as much as you need to.

Would it look that bad with some 2" trim and a small reveal? Leaves more wall between the window and door anyhow.

If those windows are much smaller than the rest of the windows in the room, I think they can be trimmed differently without compromising your aesthetic for the house. They almost become an entry "unit" with the door, kind of like small square sidelights...or like the little windows they used to do beside a fireplace, above the built-ins.

Too late for this one, but consider adding an idiot loop at each junction box on fiture wiring projects. The slack left in the wire will allow you to easily move a box a few inches after the fact.

Now if Mr. Weedy was to add wainscot in that room, he could incorporate the junction box into the wainscot design and...(cue explosion of Mr. Weedy's head)...

OK, finally got it done. I pulled out the sills (quick & easy), cut new ones that extended out, and put 1x2 aprons underneath on all 5 windows. I reused the sills from the 2 larger windows in the room as the top casing on these 2 windows, so only 3 pieces of wood went into the "someday another project" pile. Best thing about it: this is the final work needed to call for final inspection on our room addition (started over a year ago)!

Ahem, Mongo, it is I, not Mr. Weedy, that wears the carpenter pants in the family. I'd be wainscoting, not him. I'd just have to tell him in advance where the box needs to go. :-) Though lesson learned: next time I'll remember the details like window and door trim in placing electrical boxes.
