which tasty tomatoes do you recommend?
Comments (3)Tomatoes gotten from the grocery store are typically a hybrid variety, meaning that they won't grow true from seed. They may produce a tasty variety, but won't grow the same variety that you got the seeds from. The seeds in those tomatoes have reverted back to the traits from one of the parent plants used to product the tomato. Any plant sold at a garden center will produce a good tasting tomato. Again most of the ones sold at Wal-Mart or HD will probably be hybrids so you won't want to save the seeds. IMHO some of the best tasting tomatoes are Heirloom varieties. Common ones that you may be able to find include Brandywine, Green Zebra, & Cherokee Purple. I grow about 40 different varieties of toms. And every year a different variety shines. The flavor of a tomato depends on the weather and each year can be different. A couple years ago one of my favorites was Green Zebra, but last year Kelloggs breakfast was the winner, and while the GZ's were good last year they were not great. You don't list where you live...so at this point in the season I would recommend that you buy plants from the garden center. In many areas of the country it is too late to start toms from seed. No matter what variety you get they will taste better than anything from the grocery store, since you can let them ripen to the peak of perfection right on the plant. Next year you may want to check out Seed Savers Exhcange for a great place to order some Heirloom seeds....See MoreCan you recommend a tomato variety for me?
Comments (8)I will second Polbig. For me it is an Early, good flavored early maturing variety that produces all season long for me. I have been planting them for 3 or 4 years now. I doubled my planting of them this year. They are extremely short plants. That helps with having to cover them and uncovering them in the spring. One down side is that sometimes if the fruit will "Point" in a cold spring. Point means the fruits elongate and come to a point. Not a bad thing, but some may not like it. Comments (11)Thanks for your contributions! If by "Rose" you mean the pinkish large variety whose seeds first came from Johnny's, I would consider that one of the truly great tomatoes. I used to grow them and I hope those seeds are still available. Never heard of Julia Child, tho....See MoreCan anyone recommend a BRIGHT yellow and green hosta for my friend?
Comments (10)Yellow can be a tough color to maintain on a Hosta as it depends so much on the lighting. Too much sun and it bleaches out. Not enough and it doesn't stay bright yellow. Orange Marmalade and Forbidden Fruit do not stay yellow. Autumn Frost can if its planted in mostly shade, but still gets dull later in the year. What size Hosta is she looking for? Grand Tiara stays yellow and green for me (if she wants a small Hosta) and I expect Emerald Tiara does as well. Dance With Me and Summer Breeze are great choices in a medium, but I don't grow those. How about Afterglow or Goodness Gracious (those might not be considered bright yellow) or Wolverine? Victory or Majesty. I guess there really are quite a few....See Moregumby_ct
