Crazy Mockers! My goodness, I have scads of them here this year. I have 2 pairs nesting in the yard about 150 feet apart. That is amazing to me because they are so territorial. There are lots of squables between them, but they press on. One of my males goes to the top of a telepone pole and constantly jumps up and down while he sings. They will also sing loudly for you at 3am!!! :o)

I think Black Pheobe is the one!! I checked these photos online (see link below) and as soon as I saw these pictures I said "That's it!". The markings are similar to a Junco, but that beak or bill is very distinctly different. Wish I had a better camera! I am so excited to learn more about this adorable bird. I've watched it swoop down and catch tiny moths or other insects...sometimes in mid air. Thank you all for replying and for taking interest. The best approach to a baby bird on the ground is to put it back in the nest if possible or on a branch if it seems that it has just fledged. Second best for an obvious too early fledge is to rig a small container solidly just above where the baby is sitting, but out of immediate harm's way from pets and other interested individuals, animal and human. You can watch with binoculars and shoo away those unwanted visitors and to see if the parents are returning to the baby--they may be encouraging them to fly farther afield by withholding feeding. After a prolonged period of time without parental attention, relative to the age and species the baby could be taken to a rescue center. Call them first before transport. Not every center takes every species of animal but they will advise you. Be aware of nest bird parasites.
