How to safely keep a toaster oven elevated and off the counter?
Comments (7)Heat rises, so the most important clearance will be on top of the toaster oven. I think I'd look at doing something similar to a heat shield that you use next to a built in oven. Heat shields work because they are made of material more conductive of heat than the surounding cabinet and they have a tiny air space with which to dissapate that heat. So, I think that a good 6 inches of clearance above and then use a couple of small spacer blocks to attach a stainless steel sheet to the inside of the top cabinet so that it has a bit of an air space between the stainless sheet and the cabinet. You can always use a bit of trim to hide the gap between the stainless and the cabinet. To keep things looking cohesive, I'd probably line the rest of the cabinet with stainless sheeting as well. I'd check with the oven manufacturer to find out what clearances they recommend first before doing any of the above....See MoreMicrowave solution - deeper upper cabinet?
Comments (20)We did not have custom cabinets, but ordered Kraftmaid from Lowe's. We didn't want our often used microwave and toaster oven in view when not in use, so we had one of the uppers increased in depth to 18", and had an "appliance gargage" type cabinet made to slide in between upper and countertop increased to 18", also. We have lived in our kitchen for about 8 months now and I love this set-up! I worried about the cabinet doors being open when using these appliances, but our house is a quiet one, with just DH and me, so it has not been a problem at all. Also, for us, having the doors open like this reminds us to shut them when we are done using the appliances, so they aren't perpetually open like they were when we had the old style tambour door. It looks like you have a great spot to do this where you have planned. Or, maybe you just want the upper done, but I don't have a picture of how that would look....See MoreTrying to figure out where to put toaster oven in new kitchen...
Comments (10)Something I learned about the placement of a toaster oven under cabinets. They get pretty hot. Not hot enough to damage cabinets, but hot enough that food stored above them, especially bakery goods (like flours) could be damaged. If you use the oven to bake for any length of time, as I like to do for pies and pizzas in the summertime when the toaster oven heats the kitchen so much less than the main oven, it definitely warms the items in the cabinet above. I always pull the oven all the way forward when I use it--which is nearly every day. This helps the heat to dissipate outward instead of upward. Are you sure you want the coffee area so far from the sink? The area to the left of the fridge is OK for the toaster oven, but I would want the coffee area closer to a sink--and the trash, for that matter. An idea: You could design the pantry with three vertical sections: the top for storage just as you have it, the center with an appliance garage with doors that open out and slide back and away for coffee and other small appliances, and the bottom for more storage. I kinda like this idea. (Of course it wouldn't make the coffee area any more convenient to the sink.) Probably the doors would usually be open, but could be closed when you wanted things to look tidy. By the way, I like what you decided to do with the refrigerator, the two flanking cabinets, and the need to limit obstruction of the doorway. Comments (16)I have the same setup for over 5 years and I am happy with it. Background: I moved from a house that only has a range and an otr microwave. Hated that otr microwave as it didn't sucks anything and the filter was a pain to clean. Kitchen was so so small and could not have more than one person in the cooking area and very limited counter space. When I bought the current house I want the new kitchen to have clean counter top at most if not all time (no small appliances on counter). I have enough wall cabinet space to accommodate a speed oven, convection oven, and a cooktop. We use the mw function of the speed oven daily, I also use it for most day to day baking needs as we are a small family of 3 and it hit up much faster than the big convection oven. MW function was the only request my DH has in the kitchen, so that was a must for us. I have a small toaster oven that we put away in cabinet when we don't use it (we use it at most once a wk, sometime maybe once a month). I did want to get a combi steam but I don't have enough space to add to what I already have. So I gave up that to grant DH's wish. If I have the space, I would have want to add that to my current setup as nice to have but what I have definitely meets my need. HTH....See Morelocaleater
