Deeper Base Cabinets and 12 inch Deep Uppers
Comments (14)Great thread! Aloha, why not consider lift-up, tambor or other garage-style doors at counter level? We don't want it all the way around the room, but we're thinking of doing the same thing in two corners: 30"-deep bases, 15"-deep uppers from counter to ceiling but with the first 18" (vertical) of uppers having lift-up doors to hide appliances, canisters, etc.. (We want more than the standard 12" between counter and upper to accommodate taller items.) To fori and writersblock's concerns: The lift-ups won't have the swing-out issues of regular doors (nor the same issues of shallow drawers between base and uppers, which I often see in "inspiration" magazines, but don't understand for the same reasons fori and weritersblock mention). When the lift-up is closed, 15" of counter in front. Open, it's 30" deep of counter space!...See MoreHas anyone put a microwave on a pullout shelf in an upper cab?
Comments (8)We have our microwave in our cabinet. We have a pullout shelf below the microwave. The shelf the microwave sits on is actually removable. The microwave was originally on the pullout shelf but we decided to add the removeable shelf so we could use the pullout shelf as a landing area. We have a similar opening for our toaster oven on the other side of the refridgerator The shelf that the microwave sits on is 44" from the floor. Here is a picture:...See MoreDepth of upper cabinets? Comments (8)We really don't use ours much either, and I just bought a really nice toaster oven, which means we will use it even less. I was just sucked in by the awesome price ($90 less than amazon) at Costco. Here is that wall of our kitchen. The shelf for the MW is 18" deep, and the cabinet above is 12" each. They can cut the MW cabinet down. To me, it seems like it'd be awkward to reach up to that higher cabinet with the MW cabinet sticking out so far. Am I thinking right? I'd much rather get a tiny MW than have a permanent stupid layout issue in my kitchen....See MoreMicrowave in upper cabinet: how much clearance did/do you allow?
Comments (7)The micros in those inspiration photos are installed incorrectly. The heat/steam from a microwave needs someplace to vent, otherwise you will have damage to the microwave at minimum and quite likely damage to the surrounding cabinetry over time. The optimal solution is to pick the opening dimensions that correspond to "worst case" (largest) for the microwave(s) you might consider. You can always put one in that requires less gap distances (although aesthetically it might be less desirable). For example, if you have 2 microwaves under consideration and with clearances they need openings 24W x 16D x 15H and 25W x 14D x 18H you should have an opening 25W x 16D x 18H. This would let you put either microwave in the space....See Moretaggie
