What Garage Door Opener are you going with?

Anyone going with an opener that has phone app capabilities or IFTTT? Are you going with an all in one system or adding on with one of the many items like GoGoGate 2, iSmartGate, MyDoor Opener, etc and or Chamberlin MyQ? Overhead door now has an add on but it is pricey as are many of the others so then does it make sense to go with Chamberlin but if that doesn't come with a continuous rail. What to do, what to do????

I used the Liftmaster 8550. The best feature is the TTC, Time To Close. If you are prone to forgetting to close the garage, you set the TTC to a certain number of minutes and the garage door will close by itself.

It also has the MyQ technology, but we haven't felt a need to use that.

Also have battery back-up and doors will still function during a power failure. They will open/close about 20 times before the battery dies. Battery will recharge once the power comes back on.

We have heavy wood garage doors and the 8550 handles the single doors and 17ft double doors with no problems. We have four of the 8550 units and they've performed well in the 4 years since we installed them.

Try these tips. If one of your neighbors remote controls is inadvertently programmed into your receiver, you door will open when their remote is activated. If this happens you will need to clear out your receiver and reprogram your remote controls. Press and hold the smart/learn button for 6 seconds or until you see the small LED light near the button turn itself off. If the above steps have been followed and the symptoms continue, there may be an electronic short in either the wall control button or the receiver logic board. In this case, remove the wall control wires from terminals 1 and 2 on the motor unit. Should the symptoms persist after the wires are removed, replace the receiver logic board. If the symptoms stop with the wall control wires removed from the motor unit, replace the wall control button, and the wires leading to the wall control button.

sorry to be confusing--the first door opener quit working after I replaced the battery. I had a second opener which also quit after replacing the battery. I now have two openers that no longer work. If your theory is correct, can you advise how to fix it? Thank you!

The first thing you should do is remove the 2 wires from the wall button on terminals 1 and 2 on the opener. Make sure all the other wires are still connected. This will eliminate the wires and the wall button itself. Sometimes the installer uses metal staples and they cut through the insulation and cause this problem. Sometimes the wall button is bad especially if there have been teenagers who slap it rather than press the button. Give this a try and post back.

This is caused by a bad logic board. The logic board is the number you gave as the model number. The model number should be found on the opposite end of the opener. But anyway this is a pretty expensive repair and I think by that part number you have an old opener. Might start thinking about a new one but in the meantime you can remove the bulb.

In my opinion, Nexia gives you the best combination of original and compatible equipment (door locks, thermostats, cameras, etc), the best phone app (iPhone), the best availability and reliability (uptime), and the best features (automations, schedules, alerts, etc). That's what you get for $10/month.

There are other home automation platforms (like Vera) that have no monthly fee, but which may lack in one or more of the other areas I listed. Everything in life is a trade-off.

There are stand-alone doorbell cameras and apps (wink), cameras and thermostats (nest/dropcam, Honeywell), garage door controllers (MyQ), security systems (SimpliSafe), lighting, etc... Home automation connects all of that stuff together in a single platform.

Example: a year ago, I got an alert that the temperature was 90 degrees at my vacation home. I remotely created a door code to let a service tech in. A couple of hours later the service tech used that code to enter the house, which caused several lights to turn on, and two different cameras started recording. I have a date time stamp of the visit, I know exactly what the service tech looks like, I know how long it took before the AC started working again, and I know the tech spent a silly amount of time sitting on my kitchen stool and doing something on his phone. Home automation.
