Bisque color for sinks, tile, etc vs white?
Comments (9)I'm no old house expert, although I live in a house that was built in the 1920's. I love bisque--had almond in the early days. I'm trying to give my kitchen (which was gutted by a PO in the 1980's) a more vintage look, including bisque appliances and 'Adobe White' painted cabinets. It all reads as white until you look at something pure white against the bisque. I recently found a porcelain stove from the 1930's: Against the 'Adobe White' closet door, (reflecting camera flash) the stove looks dark, but when I look at it, I see cream and green. I've read that oil-based paints often yellowed, so maybe painted surfaces weren't bright white for very long. BTW, your plans for the kitchen floor sound wonderful--I'd love to do a checkerboard floor. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress pics and finished project. antiquesilver, we did the same thing with a bathtub that was blue--had it professionally painted bisque, then I painted the ceramic wall tile in the room with 'Lovely Buff' epoxy. Love it!...See MoreBasically done - white and cherry shaker kitchen reveal
Comments (69)I have been absent from GW for quite some time, so I apologize for the delay in responding. Thanks to everyone for the kinds words about the kitchen. It's been nearly a year since it was finished and everything about it has been great. lynn2006 - the pullout with lid is by Rev-a-Shelf. The cabinet itself is custom as are all of the cabinets in the kitchen. Barbarav - I am loving all of my appliances. I particularly love the wall ovens, but really all the appliances are great and I'd do it all again the same way. TrueBlue234 - the cabinets are all new nsuep - the paint in the kitchen is Benjamin Moore November Skies. It's really a beautiful color. The tiles are from Heath, color is Frost I think, they are glossy, not frosted. They match perfectly with the paint and the color variation in the tiles is fantastic....See MoreWhite dishes without grey cut marks!
Comments (51)After researching this problem I definitely agree with "The Cook's Kitchen" way above. It is a combination of dishes and flatware that causes the problem. So two people with the same dishes may have or not have marks depending on their flatware type. It seems that it is the nickel content that causes the marks (bad), but that same nickel also prevents rust stains (good) - so it is a balancing act. I have Villeroy & Boch (white bone porcelain), Yamazaki (18/8 stainless) that is about 10 years old. I can see gray marks but they are not too bad and seems like they took many years to accumulate....See MoreWHITE STREAKS from cleaner on granite shower walls ! Help needed
Comments (9)I do the same as Helen. Only stock "safe" cleaning products so cleaners can't stumble into any mistakes. Cleaning lady is allowed to use any concentration of Fabuloso (pH neutal) or Odoban No-Rinse (pH neutral and can be bought and shipped to home depot) on floors, toto toilets w/sanigloss finish, etc. We also only stock Glass Plus (ammonia-free glass/surface cleaner) for cleaning glass, mirrors, and granite surfaces. If you don't like Glass Plus, what works well for granite, chrome, and stainless steel appliance cleaning is a mixture of 2:1 water to rubbing alcohol and you can add a few drops of lavendar oil to improve scent. (Rubbing alcohol bought in bulk at sam's club or costco.) I keep a bottle of this on the kitchen counter for daily wipe ups. We also stock Sprayway cleaner from sam's club for glass and mirrors and it has yet to damage any granite or marble that it may overspray onto accidently (we only have one shower with a marble threshold and some marble shelves). We also give her Weiman's granite cleaner & polish for once a week granite counter cleaning. Things I use every once in a while but hide from the cleaning lady: Oxiclean and water to deep clean porcelain and ceramic tile grout. Barkeeper's friend on things like the kitchen sink grate, chrome faucets, and faucet pop-up drains. I do keep a limited supply of Clorox cleanup bleach spray and Fantastik around for cleaning plastic toilet seats and the inside of a shower drain that gets really gross, etc....See Moremaries1120
