What style is my house?
Comments (22)"hopefully the accompanying photos will show that it's not a mishmash or a mcmansion but something more unique" But eclectic, by definition, is a mishmash of various styles so I don't understand why you apparently take offense? Marriam-Webster: eclectic: "composed of elements drawn from various sources". I don't think this house is unique, either. It's very pretty but definitely not unique. Very few houses are, because uniqueness kills resale value. I don't have skin in your game so I don't really care. I just find it funny that you ask what style your house is and the answer is: Your house has no particular style, but is "eclectic" LOL. Well, I guess it may be a fit for an architecture book that doesn't focus on styles or maybe has a chapter about houses that don't fit a particular style....See Morewhat style is my house?
Comments (11)Not mean, akl, he is just brutally honest. Most houses built today are no true identifiable style. Fenestration, in particular, is placed with no external symmetry---just where a window of any size or shape goes from the inside perspective. Case in point are those ubiquitous horizontal windows over bathtubs that make no sense stylistically from the outside. Our house was designed for our site with heavy influence and input from the original owner.......we call it the unholy alliance between architect and attorney, lol. It looks fine (especially since we had a new portico designed for it almost five years ago, but it is still "builder's delight." I guess it doesn't bother me because I didn't have a thing to do with the original design!...See MoreWhat style is my house?
Comments (3)Cute house! I am not sure - maybe a mix of traditional, colonial and modern? I think this is a versatile style and you could do just about anything you wanted with it. Also, I recommend posting on the decor forum. You might get more feedback....See MoreWhat style is my home?
Comments (10)The photos are inadequate for making useful landscaping suggestions. For instance, what is between your garage and the public street? Is there 1’ or 10’ or 30’ that is yours to the left of the house? We need to see the entire width of the front part of the property. To do that, stand by the street opposite the front door, and from that one spot take a series of photos that span the entire width of the property including the edges of the neighboring properties since anything they have planted or built near the property line may effect your plantings. Close ups of any current planting spaces will be useful as well. Chiflipper’s suggestions to match the downspot to the siding behind it and plan to add large planters is spot on, and you can also use them in winter with greenery. Check out Deborah Silver’s blog Dirt Simple and search her container ideas. You will want large containers in order to not have them dwarfed by their surroundings. http://deborahsilver.com/blog/ With all the paving, since you obviously live in an area with snow, where does the snow get moved to? Here that design would be impossible since by late February the snow would pretty much fill a large portion of the area in your photo....See Moresylviatexas1
