Need help with tile size for bathroom

Hello,

We are getting ready to remodel our master bath, and I am looking for any advice on what size tile to use. I have just about settled on on a tile, Euromarmo porcelain tile in Crema Marfil color. http://www.artistictile.net/store/porcelain-italian-floor-tile-euromarmo-crema-marfil-polished-12x24.html

It comes in a 12x12, 12x24", and I think a 24x24. I am struggling with the size tile I should use, and how to position it. Should I have the floor and shower/tub be the same sizes? Or different sizes, or different positioning? A diamond pattern or linear?

I would have loved a smaller 3x6 subway tile for the shower/tub, but I am really loving the tile.

I also really love the glossy look, but I am worried about having glossy on the floor. The tile comes in both matte and glossy finish.. Would a matte floor and glossy shower in the same tile look weird?

Attached are photos of the bathroom now before any changes. Thanks in advance for any input and ideas!!

Lily'sMom thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate the input.. I like the idea of 24x24 on the floor, but I was worried it would be too big, or perhaps like you said, the tile guy won't want to mess with it. Also, our house seems to shift a lot with the seasons (we have cracks that we fix and they reappear the following season), so would the big tiles be more susceptible to this kind of stress?

We are leaving everything as it is.. I guess this is more of a bathroom update than 'remodel' :).

If we did diagonal tiles on the floor, would we do straight across on the shower and tub for some variety?

As for the shower floor, we'll definitely use a small 2x2 matte finish tile for traction. The Euromarmo one does not come in a 2x2, so we were just going to pick a coordinating tile from another brand. I guess I was wondering more if it would be weird to have the entire bathroom floor in matte finish, and then glossy on the walls. It sounds like it might be OK, though.

Have you seen the matte tile? You'll want to use that for the floor. In your large bathroom, I'd use the 24 x 24. It provides a quieter, calmer feeling than the smaller tiles and has fewer grout lines. I think the layout depends on the size of the entry and what other tiles you might use.

With gold tile, I would restrict it to the floor only and do something different for the tub deck and shower. I have warm colors in my home but I use gold in small doses because it's such a dominant color. You have a lot of wall so you want to decide a paint color now too. I would be cautious about adding additional layers of gold in wall, tile, and counter.

What styles and colors will you use for the vanity area? Do you have inspiration pics?

First, the bathroom floor...if you want hex tiles, the only reason you might not be able to use them is if you are planning on using a membrane like Ditra under the tile. Ditra, due to the nature of it's structure, limits tile to a minimum of 2". If you're going over cement board or another smooth-surface tile backer board on your floor, you can use small hex tiles. Simply ask him what his no kidding objections are to the hex tiles. There may be a real world reason why they are too small (like over Ditra) or he simply may not like working with mosaics. Find out why. For the shower floor, I usually stick to 4" or smaller, that way there are grout lines underfoot for traction. Plus smaller tile conform to the slopes of the pan without requiring cut lines at the intersections of the slopes in the pan. 2" squares are probably most common. Some people like the flat stone or pebble mosaic, but if you suffer from grout-phobia, the irregular spacing on those might scare you away. If there is a trend these days, it's toward large format tiles. They can lead you towards a contemporary design, but they can fit other styles as well. If I can steer you towards anything, look at "topical waterproofing membranes" for waterproofing your shower. Topical membranes put the waterproofing between the tile and the tile backer board, so the tile get adhered right to the membrane. It's a better way to control moisture within a shower. Two of the more common trowel or roll-on membranes are Hydroban and RedGard, for sheet membranes, Kerdi is probably the most common one. Probably the best, and easiest way to waterproof a shower these days is with a Laticrete flanged drain and Hydroban. You can wade through youtube videos or visit Laticrete's website to see what that is all about. Remember...unless you are planning on selling, I'll caution you to use tile sizes and patterns that you like, that meet the style of your house. Don't design for the latest fad, unless it's something that you really prefer. If you have trouble defining the tile size, pattern, or style that you do like, it can sometimes help to go to a site like houzz and look over bathroom photos there.

My DD used Daltile's Florentine Carrara for her tub surround and on her floor. She used the matte finish for both. She does not have a separate shower. That tile does come in a 2x4 mosaic. If you used that in the matte finish on the shower floor, it shouldn't be slippery. I do also think it would be fine to use the same tile on both the shower floor and bathroom floor. My DD used white grout and it actually looks a little to yellow next to the tiles. She wishes she had done a grey. Take a look at Custom Building Products Platinum or Rolling Fog colors. It looks to me like either of those might work.

If your house shifts you really need to discuss with who will lay the tile as to which size and underlayment will be best choice...

it can even be problamatic to use in the shower walls if the house shifts and the foundation moves because it might create stresses in the walls...

I would not use a larger format 24x24 tile in that situation... I think you would be best served for the floor using smaller tiles (12x12max) with something like a Schlueter mat on your subfloor or even a LVT--luxury vinyl tile--which now comes in waterproof choices for wet areas....

Larger tiles have a real issue with being curved in their backs because of the firing process...there can be issues with lippage between tiles...so even buttering the bottoms doesn't prevent the problem...

we used a variety of tile sizes in the bathrooms, but all were the same tile/color pattern the shower in the master bath has at least 4 sizes /shapes floors are small possibly 3x3 walls -bottom 60 percent and ceiling is 3x8 top 40 percent is 4x4 flooring in the rest of the room is 12 in square very happy with the bathrooms, all 3 are tiled the same (a porcelain marble look)
