The one thing I will comment on is if she has AVAST currently on the pc set up and running well and it is updating and taking care of business then I would leave it well enough alone. If she were to try to now install some other AV program then AVAST would have to be fully removed first not a task I think you would allow her to do on her own and there would be no need to undertake that if she has a good working AV. Plus if this is an older pc resources may already be stretched and limited and using a resource hungry AV like Norton will definitely stretch her resources much more and that is not a good thing. Free AV like AVAST and Microsoft Security Essentials are absolutely fine and are highly recommended. However a malware remover is a different program which is why I suggest using malwarebytes, superantispyware is also a fine malware remover both free. A good layered protection is the absolute best protection you can have. I am a comcast customer but don't use my comcast email account. Outlook express is no longer supported in newer versions of windows it is about to the end of it's life span and it is a good idea to go ahead and move on from it to something newer. Thanks pk, I got from landzdown a path from Corrine when I restored. It is different and it works too -If you call losing all data files working. The ports and menus are good. I have used Outlook for years and it is not easy to set up and keep. The new one might be better -easier. It is wonderfully powerful until a virus hits. It gives up data easily. Too many techs have played with my libraries and I have accepted today I will have to rebuild.. The empty libraries of work and life. My Pictures is under My documents. Yep. They are scattered but they are empty folders. Thanks for the wizard hint. Maybe someone will have an idea how to set it up libraries again. I never liked them-didn't need them. Thanks again... not too many users on here who use Outlook. Comcast doesn't like it and the port numbers change w/o notice as you may have experienced. Ellie

Anything is possible at BB. The first one I took back had a corrupt hard drive the second developed so many problems that a very qualified award winning certified Microsoft volunteer who has followed that old computer suspects this is what happened. As for the new one I had to replace. Costco concierge service did diagnostics on the phone with me and came to the conclusion that it needed to be returned because the operating system was not responding at all and perhaps the hard drive wasn't installed. It was plugged in and had a friend go through all of the plugs as was asked of us by the service. I took out all of the sockets in my place and had them replaced to meet the country wide code and also bought new surge protectors for my computer. I also have not put in any Microsoft software. The more I read the more I am not qualified to put it in and take care of the problems that most likely will ensue. I called a Microsoft store. There is a central phone bank in Texas that answers for all the calls that come in to the stores around the country. They could not get the store near me to answer the phone and suspected they were all busy. They tried three times as I stayed on the phone. I am not allowed to have the direct number to the store. There are many menus and the idea is you can help yourself by listening to these menus. I want to know if I can bring my PC and buy some software and have them install it.. This can all cost about the same price as my computer. I would like to talk with Bill Gates. The stores have also got bad reviews around the country. There are some excellent ones too but din't reign. I appreciate the idea of not wanting to go through a learning curve for both an operating system that people complained about so vehemently that they made one revision that will help me but then you have software that is either a rental package or a package deal that has difficulty with Outlook That's okay if I have step-by-step instructions or near an IT person which I always had at work. You might be very happy using Google's Gmail system. It has all (or most) of the features of Outlook including email, calendar, contact book, and other little applets. It was made to compete with Outlook. Many companies use it as their internal system, yet it's easy enough for any individual to use. ellie, I need a high speed connection, faster than DSL can provide, because I type very, very fast..............just kidding. It's really nothing exotic. I need a robust up-link capacity (about 5 megs) for Slingbox use. Slingbox is a hardware and software system that allows watching my TV (both live and previously DVR'd programs) over the internet in HD quality from anywhere. DSL usually can't get to much beyond 1 meg or so, that's not nearly enough. Also, cable (and fiber optic where available) can provide more down-link capacity than DSL, essential when you have a household of multiple users (kids) all trying to stream something video-related at the same time.
