Thanks so much for the ideas, Lilysmom! I'll check to see if "staining" it would be an option, that would totally solve my dilemma. Yes, all our other interior doors are stained. I don't think I'll go with a white door - I think it would just contrast too much for my liking, especially since we won't have white repeated anywhere else in the room. I like the idea of pulling in a color from the decor, that may just work! I'm also liking the idea of maybe going a shade darker than the walls. Thanks again!

You can paint fiberglass doors no problem. Our fiberglass french doors to the deck are the cream exterior color on the outside and white on the inside.

Our front entry door is black both on the outside and inside. Some people here have done black interior doors throughout the house. It looks pretty cool. Sorry, photos aren't the best, but you get the idea.

Thanks gsciencechick, from your pictures looks like the black door made a big impact in your space as opposed to white. I don't think black or white is right for my particular room, but going a darker shade than the wall color - either on the same strip or even in a different color family - might just be the way to go. Thanks so much for the pics! Any chance you remember the paint color you chose for your front room? That looks like a lovely blue/gray, maybe even some green in it??

Depends on the door. Newer doors are not meant to be painted. If they are I would paint them the wall color..or leave them the off white they come as. As I look around my exterior doors are all white on the inside and yet the inside doors are a very dark stain. The trim out in this house was HIDEOUS when we arrived. So dark one thought it was a cave. Swapping out the cabinetry and painting some paneling really helped. The trim and doors remain. It works fine.

Wow arcy, I had no idea newer doors aren't meant to be painted. Surely that can't be all doors - our fiberglass ones did not come off-white, they're more of a sickly blue-gray. Just to be sure we could paint it (and to follow-up on Lily'smom suggestion that it may take stain), I checked the manufacturer's website; it says the door can accept both. Yay! Stain to the rescue! If it looks horrible (since it's not real wood and is really just a faux finish), looks like 2 shades lighter on the paint strip will work, and will pull some color from other fixed elements in the room. And may bring a lighter element to the space; I definitely don't want it to feel cave-like. Thanks again for everyone's comments!

I would look at gsciencechick's pictures and then decide whether you would like your door to stand out or blend in. She has great examples of each.

Thanks k9arlene - my walls will be on the dark side too, and low natural light. I was initially thinking a darker door, but after looking at paint swatches I think it would just be too dark overall. Thinking of going 1 or 2 shades lighter than our wall color if the faux stain looks too faux. :)

I think it will be quite difficult to match your door to the trim by staining it. If your trim had been white I think it would be fine, but putting stained Fiberglas next to stained wood would invariably make the door look less natural than the wood. I think a shade or two darker or lighter than the walls would look fine.

I had a stained fiberglass door in a prior house that I just loved. It looked awesome. I had the manufacturer stain it though as I have heard that it's pretty easy to mess up the stain on fiberglass. It was a decent quality door, and the finished result looked darn like real wood to me. But I wouldn't attempt it myself as a DIY project unless you are very confident in your skills.

Patriceny, I agree - I've been reading up on it (here on GW) and the staining definitely does not sound like a DIY project for me. My artistic abilities don't extend much past making paper chains, so I'll be leaving this up to the professionals. :)
