Yes, if the section of the dual capacitor that you use has the same capacitance as the original capacitor and a voltage rating either equal to or higher than the original capacitor.

Thanks , Its equal I should have described more about whats going on.Two weeks ago the ac was running weak the old capacitor had a rusted cap .The salesperson at the parts store gave me a dual with the same readings . Earlier today the compressor and fan stopped running, air still blows into the home . I took a look at that new capacitor and it has a small dent on the side near the bottom. Hopefully another capacitor will solve that problem .

The best way to know if the original capacitor is defective is to measure its capacitance. The new capacitor may or might not solve your problem.

Absolutely. Just connect one end to the common and the other end to either the fan or the compressor! The small dent isn't a problem. Also, usually if the fan isn't locked up or has worn bearings, it will probably run with the new capacitor. The only way to know is check it with a capacitance meter. Piece of cake! Good question.

The answers you got to your question are correct,problem is you are are asking the wrong question. The condenser fan and compressor did not quit simply because of one capacitor. I'm a fan of diy and happy to assist but I'm afraid you are in over your head. Call a pro before you damage something else. Forgive my saying so but it's the truth,this is a classic example of why most parts houses refuse selling to diyers. They are now faced with you returning a part because you believe it is defective. The failure rate for defective new capacitors is miniscule . Actually,the failure rate for caps over the life of a motor is less than any other component in the system.
