Need to drastically cut back a rhododendron

We have a beautiful rhododendron that is 20-25 years old. It ishealthy and givesabundant, beautiful flowers every spring. We are having work done on the house that will require the plant to be severely cut back (as in two of the four main limbs being cut off). My question is - What are the chances the plant will survive? I adore this plant and would be sad to see it go.

It would be the back of the plant that is closest to the chimney.

A very large red rhododendron like this one is probably the variety Nova Zembla, one of the very vigorous and hardy so-called ironclads. Cutting away even main limbs will not kill it, but you may have to wait several years for it to regrow to its current size. The fact that seems to be in a sunny location will help insure regrowth.

Without knowing what sort of work is being done on the house, these cautions may be unnecessary, but you should try to avoid soil compaction if workers or equipment will be near the base of the plant. Putting down boards or plywood temporarily will help. If the work involves masonry on the foundation or chimney, make sure mortar and any other lime rich materials do not raise the soil pH around the rhododendron. Finally, ropes and stakes can often be used to pull shrubs away from the area being worked on. This could perhaps make radical cutting back to ground level unnecessary.

If it pleases you, it's what you should do. The important thing is to feed your enthusiasm. If you like working with mulberry, start some (dormant) cuttings. The tree is very vigorous & you'll have material you can work on in no time if you put them in the ground. FWIW - you don't often see jins on deciduous material; and I realize it's just a picture, but for future reference the jinned top should be either taller or shorter than the live apex. The picture confuses the eye. You can't be sure if you should be looking at the jin or the living part as the compositions apex. BTW - I meant to mention you can treat your tree for the leaf spot with over-counter fungicides that have Tebuconazole. It's systemic and works very well - I've been using it for quite a while & have not yet found anything sensitive to it. I think this is one of those cases where I need to make myself look at your tree through YOUR eyes. My vision of how to turn your tree into a literati involves allowing it to grow long (temporarily) & keeping all the branches pruned off the bottom so very little taper develops and waiting until the bark develops some character. I would also put movement into the trunk & remove some bark in strategic places to add character. At some point, after the bark develops, I would chop the tree high on a long trunk & utilize the few branches I had developed after deciding their placement enhanced the composition. Looking through your eyes, I need to see that your goal isn't a tree that is all it can be several years from now ..... you want a tree you can put in a pot and be proud of now. Both goals are perfectly fine, the paths are just different. Bonsai is about fun and your own personal satisfaction, so it doesn't matter what I say or think, as long as you're getting what you need from the experience. ;o) Keep us posted. Al

Ringa, Pruning peaches this time of year in GA is perfectly fine. You'll have rapid callus formation of wounds at this time. There are a couple of considerations that may be relevant to your proposed pruning. First, if you remove 1/2 the tree it may remove so much foliage that scaffolds underneath could become sunburned. I've had this happen to scaffolds before when I drastically prune this time of summer. So you'll either want to leave some foliage to shade the scaffolds, or save your most drastic pruning for early spring. Second, lesser peach tree borer is more prevalent in the Southeast. The moth preferentially attacks damaged tree tissue (like large pruning wounds) so you'll want to keep an eye on any large cuts you make regardless of what time of the year you prune. Mapler, You're in a much colder zone. Trees are generally more susceptible to winter kill when pruned late in the season or during winter. It's fine to prune now, but I wouldn't advise pruning later than July. Any major pruning is probably best done late dormant/early Spring for your zone.

Radical pruning of a big old rhododendron is always a bit of a gamble, but usually works out in the end if you're willing to overlook its appearance for a few years. The colder the zone, the longer rejuvenation will take as a general rule. There are two basic approaches: Cut back all at once to a height of 1 to 2 feet. Buds and new growth should break from the old wood in time. Keep an eye on the new growth and prune to avoid a tangled mess. Cut back to the same height but do 1/3 of the total plant in each of 3 years.

Unfortunately, you may have no choice but to lift and look if you want to save your plant if it was planted too deeply and was rootbound. Can you probe next to it and see if in two years time the roots have expanded out into the surrounding soil or if they are still in the shape of the nursery pot? Henning - "Plants wilt and die slowly when their roots become blocked: Root strangulation - This is best prevented by proper root pruning when planting. If the plant is not too far gone, it might be rescued by digging and removing the soil. Then cutting any circling roots that may be strangling other roots. The roots need to be opened up. Any time the roots are exposed during this process, they must be kept moistened. Roots that dry out will die. "

Thank you for your response! We are converting from electrical to gas stove and need to install a 50lb propane tank. The kitchen is on the opposite side of the house but due to regulations this is literally the only place it can be placed (tucked into the corner to the right of the chimney) unless we decide to put it off to edge of the yard....we just may do that if I can convince my husband to dig the necessary trench. I really do not want to do anything to this beauty. She is in better condition now...this photo was taken after we had a severe snow storm season two winters ago.

Your husband may not be overjoyed with this bit of information, but most rental centers have gasoline powered trenchers available. These are not difficult to use, but do take some muscle and effort. Compared to hand digging a trench, however, they make a difficult job much easier. A landscape company may also be willing to dig a trench - probably using a power trencher - for not too much money. There are no doubt regulations for trench depth and other considerations, so be sure to check with the gas company and local authorities. A radical cutting back of rhododendron of this size to install a small propane tank for a single use does strike me as really too bad when an alternative exists. A 50 pound tank in another part of the yard would also be easy to disguise with a trellis type enclosure and some plantings.

akamainegrower...I am happy to report that with a slight adjustment to the placement of the tank we were able to fit it with removing only one small, unnoticeable branch from my rhododendron :)
