My phone charges via an adapter. However, I always carry portable backup power with me. I love the Jackery Giant and it charges FAST, plus, it goes where you go. When you're charing in the car and aren't driving far, your phone won't get much.

I have a 12 volt adapter with a lightening connect at the end (from the Apple Store) and it will charge a completely drained phone quickly.

thanks 4kids4us, that's exactly what I needed to know. I very rarely charge my phone in the car but I would like to have adapter in there just in case. DD just kills me with the usb cords. She kills ALL of them. I have to get a new one today because she killed the one I just gave her to replace another one she killed. I think because she uses her phone while it's plugged in charging, it ends up splitting about half in inch down from the plug that goes into the phone. When I charge me phone it's either on my desk at work or on counter at home.

It depends on the volts and amps supplied to the USB port. A USB port is generally 5 volts and the amps vary. The USB ports that are hardwired to house voltage reads 5 volts, 2 amps, which charges any phone, iPad or tablet quickly. A plug-in adapter is often rated at 5 volts, 1 amp.

In my Ford Fusion, the USB port is 5 volts, 750 mA and does an adequate job of charging a phone. If I use the 12 volt power port, it supplies 5 volts at 1 amp and charges in about half the time as the USB port.

Slow charging can also be caused by dirty charge ports or dirty connectors.

Wipe with q-tip and alcohol to clean.

I picked up DD a new usb cord that had a 12 volt adapter included. I did see some amps listed, I didn't have my glasses to see exactly what the amps were directed to so I just bought whatever pack had the higher listed amps on it. Now I'm gonna let my phone die to see if the adapter works compared to the usb port ;-)

I don't understand all the technicalities of phones/chargers/USB ports, etc., but I do know this: when I had a 10-year old Cadillac, my phone would not charge in it when the car engine WAS NOT ON. I was amazed to discover that DH could charge his phone in his Chevy pickup even when the truck was off.

I assume that all vehicles now will charge electrical devices, whether on or off.

Cars come with usb ports? I don't see one next to my 8 track player....

Hondas don't charge unless the engine is on, at least as recent as our 2014 CRV.

Little bug, only some new cars offer that feature. None of our new cars have it, though I wish they did. Our power goes out a few times a year for extended days (weather related) so it would be nice to have that to charge our cell phones. My neighbor's car has that.

I didn't realize how quickly my battery goes down. I got to work at 8:30 and it was at 40%. I've sent a few texts back and forth and it's already down to 18% about 2 hours later. At this rate, the phone should be dead soon so I can go test the adapter in my car.

None of my 12volt outlets in my car work when car is off. Husband's truck has 3 and only the one closest to the driver works when vehicle is off.

I guess you would call this a Charging Station in my new Jeep. My cellphone charger fits in the small slot on the lower left. The rest - who knows?

The SD slot is to use a memory card in so if you have music stored on a SD memory card just put it in the slot and have access to the content of the memory card. The aux port is for headphones. You can get a plug that fits in the car lighter that has a lightening slot so you can use a lightening cord to your iPhone instead of a USB cable. They have them at lots of places for around 5 bucks I know they have them next to the register at big Lots and several gas stations.

If your battery is going down that fast you may want to check out what is using the battery so much. Turn down the screen brightness to the lowest level that's comfortable. Turn off anything you aren't using like Bluetooth, and go into task manager and close all the programs that you used that are staying open. And reboot your phone daily so everything can go back to off and start fresh that will stop a lot of those apps that don't close properly and keep eating up the battery. Same with tablets. Just like rebooting your computer often times makes it better and faster. It releases those memory hogs and battery hogs.

Little update to my experiment. I let my battery die. I plugged in my usb cord, NON Apple cord into the usb port in my car, turned the car on and within seconds the little faint battery showed up that it was charging...Which was weird, because the night before I had an Apple usb cord plugged in to the car port and drove around quite awhile and it never started charging. That is why I bought the 12volt adapter, figuring once the phone was dead, the usb port didn't provide enough power...but for whatever reason my cord, non apple cord worked fine using the usb port. So when I left work I did use the 12volt adapter and within about five minutes, it juiced up the battery enough to turn the phone on. Now they better not change the pin style of the next IPhone that comes out. LOL
