OT but....such sad news from Eastern US school
Comments (4)It's simply impossible to comprehend this happening. I was in tears thinking about it all afternoon. It just makes me feel even more strongly about gun control. Why in the world should someone be able to purchase an assault weapon or even a handgun? The only people that should have these weapons are the police and military personnel. I don't hunt but I don't have an issue with hunting rifles. You certainly don't need an automatic weapon to shoot a duck or a deer. The guns were registered to the shooters mother. WTF did she need these weapons for and to have them accessible to her son that was mentally unstable is criminal IMO. I don't believe that there were no indications of mental instability in this young man before this morning. People interviewed even said that he was always an "odd duck", very bright but a loner. Sounds like most of the others that have committed this sort of crime....See Morenew use for kt laundry detergent
Comments (24)Lucky is Sparky! Good for you that it did a great job on the mess, Lisa! Lillipad: No, do NOT use "baking" soda in place of washing soda. Sc-irish: I have a front loader & use it & it works fine. The original recipe, which calls for diluting with 1/2 water and 1/2 gel on the second day, says to use 1/2 cup for top load wash and 1/4 cup for front loader. I, myself, wash big loads, so I use a 1/2 cup in my front loader. Adjust accordingly if you decide not to dilute with water. Important to know also.... This detergent DOES NOT PRODUCE SUDS, but cleans your clothes great. The white vinegar(acid) rinse is important to know, as the detergent is alkaline & is thus neutralized....See MoreDo you pull your kids out of school
Comments (5)Take your son out! A few years ago, my mother passed away and I actually pulled my children out of school (5th grade and 10th) for a few days to visit with their grandmom who was very close to "the end" but had rallied for "a few good days". I am so very happy that they were able to have some time, make a last "good" memory and actually say goodbye. I know your child is much younger, so the memories will need to be reinforced with pictures, stories from you and others at the reunion and perhaps a video -- but look at this long term, he will have something to think back on when in school they bring up the subject of your family tree. (This is common in grade school, from learning vocabulary words to identifying relationships; middle school when we teach about communities and high school when we teach immigration in Social Studies and foreign languages. I know both my children had "family" used as a teaching tool, and I have used the topic in Psychology, Sociology and History classes). Also, I have known of many children pulled out of school for reasons much less compelling. Susan...See MoreHow often do you talk to your kid away at school?
Comments (43)You know, mtn, this is what happens when you raise children to be strong and independent. They go ahead and leave you. ;) Naturally it's emotionally tough at first, even though we recognize on an intellectual level the value of the opportunity. My advice would be to keep a copy of her schedule and make yourself available when she is. I tried not to schedule anything during times I knew my kids were walking to class or to an activity, or had free time. I agree that it's better to speak with them when they have some privacy. There was typically a time a few days per week when their schedules diverged from their classmates' and I got to "walk" with them. That time changed every semester, and I was always happy to accommodate their schedules. So I guess in that regard, yes, I did "schedule" a time, but it was very organic and driven by their calendars. Her class/roommates will be receiving care packages, so even though you are nearby, it's always fun to get mail....See Moremamapinky0
