Comments (27)I guess I'm the Dad in this case! I do remember having an el cheapo power mower (person propelled) when I was a kid (red and perhaps Western Auto) and using it for everything - a field at the rear of the house comes to mind... one day it was 3 feet high, the next it was "lawn". Anyway, everyone is always dumping on Craftsman tools and power equipment. I'm still using my Craftsman Eager One, 5HP, Tecumseh engine, that I purchased in 1984. I don't recall it ever failing to start except when the switch I installed to replace the dead-man handle died. It smokes, uses oil, but still cuts better than my $500 Troy-Bilt. At the beginning of the summer, I ran over a rock and bent the blade so that it was actually digging into the ground. Had to replace the blade plate and blade, but didn't faze the crankshaft or the upper crankshaft shear pins. The only maintenance I've ever done is occasionally replace the air filter, less occasionally replace the spark plug (do clean it annually), and change the oil. I think it is coming to the end of its long life and really hate the thought of getting rid of it. It really needs a total engine rebuild (chassis, etc. is still fine - no rust but lots of scrapes), but I just don't have the abilities. JimC...See MoreGeneral Questions about Reel Mowers
Comments (2)rdaystrom makes a good argument; let me contribute by agreeing it's a good idea to have a gas-engine backup mower. Pick up a used one for low price / nothing at a garage sale or on craigslist, thrifty nickel, etc. And get that nice reel mower now; you can use the el cheapo mower for a backup. Or if you want new, the end of season sales, may net you a decent Cub Cadet or MTD pusher for around $100-$140 new at one of the big box stores. If you have a lot of trees/sticks, they can be a challenge. I had an oak that shed twigs constantly; it wasn't impossible to mow but it wasn't easy. Leaf disposal was all with a rake as reels don't really shred leaves too well. Same on everything else said above for that matter. Small inclines are fine for the reel mower. Gets a little tricky where grass meets cement IF there's a weird incline; that's what your weed eater/trimmer is for, though. There are a couple of good, very educational reel mower sites you should google for; they review mowers, sell them, and tell you all about reels; from reading them, you can also decide if a reel is right for your needs. I had a reel for about 6 years. It was a small model. Go for the biggest one you can and buy quality, not cheap. It makes a difference. The new ones they make now (Brill or Garden States is the brand, I think) have a six-yr (or so) sharpening interval (assuming you don't have a lot of debris). Mowing with a reel in the right conditions can be a pretty painless experience if you stay on top of your mowing. Good luck and enjoy!...See MoreQuestion about gasoline for the mower
Comments (5)i personally have had gas gel 2x on me, once in a 3 wheeler that sat for 18 months and once in a jetski that sat 3 years. i have left the same gas(untreated) in everythign from chainsaws to mowers to generators and never had an issue as long as it is cranked and run a few minutes every few weeks. that beign said, other areas of the country have different mixes of gas and it seems that colder climate areas get bad gas gelling very quickly. i say play it safe and either stabilize it, run it often, or run it dry....See MoreLisa
