my family-room fireplace decorations
Comments (15)I'm making an effort to catch up.. lol Indeed , for someone who isn't "doing much" , you've sure done a LOT. :) Everything looks wonderful , esp little Jazz keeping watch over things. It seems the polar cub is giving him the same stink eye so I think they are even. LOL LOOVE your mantal and am green with envy of those who have one to play with. There isn't an inch of space in this house or I would have sprung one up by now. lol I have a friend who moved to Phoenix when he married his wife. They have a huge fireplace in their house that she decorates all of the time because she says they never really "need" to use it. Anyhoo... I'm SO happy to see you've felt up to decorating a bit. That's always a good thing. :)...See MorePlease help with decorating family room (post corrected)
Comments (8)My techy brother is visiting me. He says that you could mount a screen on the wall opposite the patio doors (get a motorized one with a remote) and then mount a projector over the patio doors. The screen is only visible when you are watching something, if you paint or otherwise cover up the casing, and you can build a box to camoflage the projector. It may sound wacky, but he has a projector and screen mounted to the ceiling in his family room and you really don't notice them when they're not in use. If you don't want to go that route, could you get one of those TV lift cabinets where the TV is hidden inside and then rises up when you need it? That could go under the small window. Even if the cabinet blocked the bottom few inches of the window, it might look nicer than having the TV block the window. Other than that, it does look as if the corner where the TV is now or the wall where the mirror is are your best bets. If you floated some furniture in a L-shaped configuration, either two sofas or a sectional, you could take advantage of the views and the TV screen....See MoreThose of you that have gallery halls/walls of family photos
Comments (25)Your line about "who makes the cut" has really struck a nerve with me. Let me explain. I have the strong opinion that you can do whatever you want with the photos (ie. "who makes the cut"). What you see and how you feel from the displays is all you. A display with a topic theme, color theme, or whatever theme is going to be fabulous as long as you go with your heart and your gut. I had a terrible MIL (EX now!) who actually took the time to inventory WHO was displayed in photos, HOW they were displayed, and concocted her own storylines on why I elected to leave out certain people, include others, and have some more prominent than others. She had the gall to have "sit-down talks" with me several times about my choices in displayed photos. She started sending photos with little post-it notes on where they would "look nice" & which one's I should change out. It gnawed at her to no end that I changed nothing despite her passive-aggressive instructions. I hope your family and/or friends are not the likes of the old hag I used to deal with. You should never, EVER have to explain the reasonings (themes, etc) of photos and why you display what you do. Don't want to bring a downer to this & hope I'm not making you think harder into it. This just brought back some bad memories and it's really too bad it had to go that way. End of therapeutic vent. Gayle...See MoreFamily Photos on Display.......Dying a Digital Death?
Comments (48)I guess I'm a sentimental old fool (at 53, LOL). Here is my experience... I have a few picture books printed online and they are great. However, IMHO, they can't compare to actual printed (or developed) pictures. I was tasked with writing a biography of my M&D's life, and believe me, it wasn't short! To do this I used verbal accounts from my M&D; a few thousand slides from my M&D, GP's and Great A&U; hundreds of photographs; my Great Aunt's daily journals; and tape recordings we sent from overseas to my GPs'. I digitized and transcribed almost all of it. Even though the slides were decades old, the digital quality was amazing. The scanned photographs, even the old, old, B&W's, were generally good quality. I only used a few pictures that were taken with a digital camera. The best part of the whole process was the obvious telling of their life story by my parents to me. As an adult you hear stories you weren't aware of as a child or wouldn't have been privileged to. The second best was handling the old photographs. Actually feeling them in my hands, turning them over to see if there was any writing on them, thinking of all those who had looked at them before me. Right up with this feeling was the handling of letters and my Aunt's journals. It's as if I could re-touch family members deceased through the pictures, letters, and journals. The nostalgia cloaked me with love when sifting through the pictures, holding each one in my hand and remembering. The biography is now complete and published. It's an amazing story and there are pictures, journal excerpts, and even conversations from the tapes that were transcribed (like when my sister was born and my Dad got the other four kids' reactions and my Mom talked to my Grandparents right after the birth). This is a long winded way to say that I prefer, much prefer, holding and looking through actual photographs to looking at the pictures printed in a book. If they are in a photo album, you can still take them out, look at the back, handle them, scan them, kiss the faces of your loved ones, hold them next to your heart. It's just not quite the same, for me, when it's a picture printed on a page of a book....See MoreBunny
