Need help pruning young apple tree
Comments (2)I am far from an expert, so proceed with my advice at your own risk. Here goes: the tree is so young that you have plenty of room for correcting the error. If it were MY tree, I would loosely stake the tree trunk straight now. Then, when it's dormant, i would cut the central leader back to below the top bend, and shorten some side limbs. For the next threeyears, don't let the tree produce any fruit. The tree's energy needs to go to developing strong roots and trunk. In a couple years, when the trunk is much stronger, remove the stake....See MoreApple tree needs help
Comments (3)Are you sure that's an apple tree and not a peach? That looks more like peach leaf curl. Apples can get some curled foliage, typically due to insects, but seldom will they ever develop that red puckering. That is characteristic of peach leaf curl fungus. Try unrolling the leaf to see if there are any signs of insects curled up inside....See MoreApple Tree Dying! Need Help!
Comments (13)Recently planted trees all require regular supplemental water for the first 2 years of their life. The idea is to trail off to the their normal requirement. Apples, after they're established ( requires 2 to 3 years), need a healthy dose of water (rain or irrigation) monthly. In my climate (the northwest) that means I must water through our dry summer months.) Regularly watering the lawn is NOT enough for any tree....See MoreNeed help to get rid of bugs on my apple tree
Comments (2)If your trees are small, it is easy to pick them off. Do it in the evening as they are more sluggish at that time. You can then drown them in a bucket of soapy water. Basically they are foliage feeders and will feed on the younger leaves. For severe outbreaks on older and taller trees, many insecticides work. I am told Sevin really works well on them. I use Imidan on my fruit trees and was spraying every 14 days over the summer. Imidan worked well but by day 12 or 13 more were back and feeding so I always knew when the insecticide was wearing off. They seem to prefer my grapevines and sweet cherries over apple trees. However some of my apples had them. Amazing that some apple varieties must be preferred as Honeycrisp got hit the worst and some varieties were not touched at all....See Moredirtguy50 SW MO z6a
