Kitchen lighting along with a ceiling fan
Comments (9)It depends, of course, on how big your kitchen is, how many windows there are and probably other things I'm not thinking of. But . . . in my kitchen, which is about 12 x 15 including an eat-in area and has a large north-facing window and two smaller west-facing windows, we have both a ceiling fan (a traditional Hunter with a schoolhouse type globe that holds -- I think -- one 75-watt bulb), three pendants (60-watt, one over the sink and a matching one in front of the second small window as well as one over the kitchen table, and three 5-inch cans (two over the range and one in front of the pantry cabinet). We also have undercabinet fluorescent strips. I'm glad to have all those lights (except the second pendant which I only put up to balance the one over the sink and which we rarely turn on). I use the UC lights all the time, as well as the cans over the range. The ceiling fan light gives fair general purpose light but without the other task lighting my kitchen would be too dark. All except the UC lights are on dimmers and I use the dimmers all the time too....See Moreceiling fan for kitchen and lights attached to or in ceiling beam
Comments (6)I have a fan in my kitchen and while I find it a distinct relief in hot weather, I can't have it on while canning or any cooking that requires consistent, steady temperature control, as the fan tends to blow the flame around. That's fine - I turn the fan down or off for a while. It hasn't killed me yet, so it isn't that big a deal. My house is a Craftsman and I looked high and low for an appropriate-style ceiling fan that wasn't scary-expensive. Apparently I was hunting Unicorns. I settled for a basic simple fan style that at least doesn't look all wrong, even if it wasn't what I'd envisioned. It was cheap, and can be easily upgraded down the road. Not much help, I know - I have box beams all over my main floor (although not in the kitchen) but the light fixtures are not in the beams. Comments (13)We had a hunter fan with a buil-in light fixture that wasn't a kit. We did some checking and without taking the fan apart, couldn't be sure if the problem was the motor or the remote receiver. It was an incredibly heavy unit installed on a 14 ft ceiling -- we installed it DIY and we knew what a beast it was and a repair wasn't going to be easy or cheap -- in our case as much as a really good fan. This time of year, you should see sale and mark down prices on fans, You can probably put in something basic/classic for $100-$150. If you can DIY, you might leave it at that. If you can DIY a little more or have to call an electrician, I would look into changing those boob lights to recessed LED floods. When you are getting ready to sell is not the time to cheap out and not fix things. A new fan might not get you more money for your house, but one that is not working will definitely cost you hundreds or more -- and that is if the potential buyers don't see get concerned about repairs or lack of maintenance and pass on it altogether....See MoreKitchen/Living Room ceiling fan and lighting configuration?
Comments (1)I would forego the fan in the kitchen. There's no need for it. Because your sink is right in front of the island, I would go for a pendant only over one of them. It can look too busy to have them over both, especially when they overlap in the sight line. Over the island would be my vote. Recessed light everywhere would be your best bet but don't know your wants or budget. I would consult with a lighting professional, as lighting plans are actually more complicated than people think....See MoreFori
