My 2016 seedling update

I can't find my original post about my seeds, so I'm starting this new thread. I have lost a total of 5 of my volunteer BP seedlings due to this extreme heat we've been having on the gulf coast, but am making sure the rest of my babies have adequate water and indirect sunlight for the duration. The smallest pots are sitting together in a shallow tray of water, and all of the plants look great now. The larger ones are also getting more shade than sun, and I water them thoroughly after the sun goes down, to prevent losing any more. I still have no idea what some of these babies are, and can only hazard a guess based on characterisitics on 2 of them. I know for a fact that 3 of them are Reaper, and that 3 are volunteer BP, and 1 is Hab Hybrid (not sure what cross). As for the rest which I forgot to label when I sowed.... I know they can only be either mini bell, Peter, Hab hybrid, or my own cross of that same Hab hybrid to a BP. One of my unidentified babies has been munched by a caterpillar which I took care of, as u can see in the pics, but other than that they are all healthy & looking great! Some of them look a bit stunted, which I'm blaming on the intense heat (daily heat index of over 104° F) we've had for several weeks. So I'm down to 12 from 17, which is ok by me, considering my limited space

I meant to put Hab Hybrid on bottom left pot (2nd pic) but accidentally put a ? instead. I'm pretty sure this is the same Hab hybrid plant as the parent one from last grow season.

My seedlings are all doing great! Here are some updates pics...

Still don't know for sure what 2 of these babies are, but there are for sure 2 Reaper & 3 BP in this batch.

This one is a definite mixture. Sorry about the lighting, the next couple pics are the same plants. The tall one in the far left is my biggest reaper, and I'm starting to think the one directly beside it is maybe a Peter pepper.

The three in the center row are either the mystery habanero hybrid from last year, or my own cross of that same hybrid to a BP... Too early to tell yet, but I think only 1 is my own cross based on plant characteristics. The little shabby looking guy in the foreground (black pot) had a rough start. 1st thrips, then spider mites. I've gotten rid of the pests, and the lil guy is coming back slowly. No clue what it is yet, but could be mini bell (?)

Left is Reaper, right is Peter pepper (?) though I'm not 100% sure. Time will tell I guess!

We also planted a nectarine seed and the tree grew up so large and strong, but again the fruits were tiny, green and bland. We used them to throw at each other :D We did however, have great success with a yellow peach tree, the fruits were plentiful, large, and very sweet. The new owners of the house decided to take it down though because the tree didn't stand very well, it needed a lot of staking, the root system wasn't very good. As long as you have the space though, they are extremely fun to watch grow and develop from seedling to tree never knowing what you will get. And you never know when you may be blessed with something really unique and desirable.

I got it from Florida Colors, I got Lani Beauty, Makaha Sunn, and Black Tiger, Carol told me I would be disapointed with Black Tigers performance in our heat, so I scrated it off the list right before she mailed them out. I wish someone who has Black Tiger in Texas would post how it does here. I love its color, and wish I could grow it. I called Carol last month to see if she had Raspberry Sundae, she did not. Barbra

Well if josh can't grow melons in Cali not sure why I even bother! What do you think was the issue Josh? I will say that I wouldn't even bother if I didn't have a greenhouse, my season just isn't long enough and since I only have a tiny greenhouse I could only fit 2 containers in there so I still have 3 melon containers outside. I need to harvest my last sugar baby and swap it out for my American melons I think but I want to make sure my sugar baby is ripe first. Our nights are at freezing now at least a couple times a week. Ugh. Sorry some things didn't so great this year habjalokia, that's the way it goes sometimes. My potatoes and corn were a busy this year, which is weird because usually I get hundreds of pounds of potatoes. Here is one of my American melons we just ate this week we have a couple more on. It's was more of a honeydew style, tasty but probably could have been a bit riper. So juicy though kind of like a cross between a cucumber and a melon. And here are the charentais, a French cantaloupe. We have eaten one and it was delicious. Tiny though.

wow Conny that's a lot of seedlings. So many different varieties. I probably will be planting more seeds after the holidays. I love your greenhouse. Great setup! Gill, Yes it does take awhile to recover. I think the one that are pinched recovered faster than the one I chopped the roots off. But that's it for this year with experimenting on them. Hopefully they grow bigger and stronger by winter. Thank you, Ann

Thx northeast_chileman! I tossed the unsprouted cells, so now it's seedling updates from here on out. How big/old do my reaper seedlings have to be to start setting flowers? This is my 1st year growing them, so I'm not sure what to expect out of the 3. One looks like it started out a tad stunted, but is beginning to come around. It's the one in the bright blue pot on my pics update comment (1st pic)

*** PIC UPDATE***

My babies are all growing well, with the exception of 1 teeny reaper, one (?) that battled thrips & lost several leaves, and 2 stunted BP volunteers. Here are some updated pics, taken this morning...

These are all Black Pearl... Volunteers from one of my 2nd year plants.

I believe one of these is Peter pepper, and the other mini-bell

The largest of my 3 Reapers

My other 2 Reapers (note one is still teeny tiny, but thriving)

BP x Habanero hybrid (experimental cross pollination between these plants)... Will be interesting to see what the pods look like. Next season I am starting some BP X Thai Dragon that I cross-pollinated a few weeks ago & have some good pods from.

And finally.... The larger babies are the Hab hybrids from last yr's seeds (unknown cross, but def Hab type), and the 2 leafed puny guy I haven't positively ID'd yet (battled thrips but is slowly coming back)
