A couple of things right away the pictures on the wall are no good they are too small and hung way too high , the mirror above the fireplace is not reflecting anything worth seeing twice . this is a large space and IMO the sectional is the wrong choice since it is too small The pillows shown are just boring and you need to add at least one more color to the mix the side table really doesn’t work IMO it needs to be larger to allow for a decent sized lamp and still have a place to put a drink or book. . I am not really getting a feel for your style but I think an actual coffee table is needed and the tufting makes no sense in the space . Maybe ask the designer for an explanation of where they are going with all of the disconnected pieces as i can’t see the vision at all

What does talked to a designer actually mean? Did she draw up a floor plan, take measurements and source furniture for you? Have you thought of two sofas rather than a sectional?
Would create much better flow for the room. Not fond of her choices, they seem rather dated, you can do better.

I agree -- it's so hard to pick the fabrics and the find the right scale furniture to fit the space. And I have young kids to consider.

The goal is a cozy family room with some style. The problem is that I like a lot of different style like coastal/transitional/farmhouse.

The designer had picked a 6,000 sectional with a great fabric and coordinating pillows but that's over 90% of the budget!!

The rowe couch has a different footprint so the bigger end table doesn't work and the upholstery is not so great. I'm thinking I should look for a different sectional.

She came and measured and did a floor plan with pieces but the budget wasn't considered so it wasn't very helpful and now I feel like I have to chose everything on my own even though I paid a $250 retainer to a purchase of $5000 at the store.

No to a sectional. Did uyouhire a designer? I don't get it. Looks like you already have those drapery panels hung and the chair and footstool. Don't buy anything else u till you have a plan in place with appropriately scaled pieces for your space. That poor chair looks lost. Two armchairs may be best. You don't have to purchase all at once, but get a plan that you can do in stages. Is the carpet staying?

Carpet and curtains are staying. The chair I could use elsewhere, though.

A nice accent plant like a Fiddle Leaf Fig in the corner near the window would be really cool. You could tie in with some modern small planter pieces with boxwood balls, or moss..

No to matching sets! No to a loveseat. Two sofas look like they would work, but I don't know your room dimensions. Please reconsider a sectional. The inexpensive ones, tend to be very oversized.

I think what you need first is an area rug. You need to anchor down the center of the room. Place it right on top of the wall to wall carpet. Make it big enough that it can be about a foot from the fireplace hearth and tv unit and then make sure it goes under the existing sofas by at least a foot. A simple blue/blue checked sisal rug would work - a tight pattern with a strong defined border.

Secondly - pull the blue patterned chair forward more and make sure that it is also on the rug and participating in the room and not being forgotten in the corner.

Third -Insert a decent sized coffee table. 4' wood top round.

Fourth - the baby blue footstool just appears out of place. With a rug and a coffee table you may not need it.

Fifth - Are your existing brown pieces of furniture in need of replacement? A light grey sofa on a light carpet is going to disappear. If those pieces are still solid consider keeping them but load them up with pillows and throws - a la Sarah Richardson- in Sarah beiges, light blues and maybe even some orange/reds.

Six - Add end tables with lamps. Pewter colored metal tables with thin wiry legs and glass tops with lamps that have an off-white glazed base.

Seven - keep the fireplace mirror, but get bigger decorative pieces on the side. The pieces that are there now are too small relative to the scale of the mirror.

Eight - and as International Tree said - add a big fiddle leaf fig in the corner to the left of the fireplace behind the chair.

Nine - enjoy the room.
