Comments (22)AnnieDeighnaugh - that is a fantastic idea. If your other thread has construction details, could you possibly link to it? Thanks for the design seeds palette, these are fun and useful. In this case, I was able to eliminate two colors fairly quickly: the dark grey and tan. I like the silver in the Phoebe Howard room (I think the sofa fabric will give a similar effect), the white, but think I want more contrast than the light brown. mlweaving_Marji - The sofas are by Hickory White (left) and Sherril Furniture (right). The Sherrill one model # is 2186 1/2. I don't remember if there's a loveseat in that model but there are many loveseats to select. mtnrdredux - Keep after me please! I do want some zing in here. Orange built-ins?! I have the fun lights ... we wired for sconces over DH's sofa (not sure about what we're putting over mine yet, probably floor lamps) and also want something really nice and dark for contrast. TV (sigh) will help, perhaps the brown tile, or a combination of a dark reclaimed wood mantel and a great tile. Here's one I found on Filmore Clark recently: I actually rather like the idea of the tile with a really dark brown mantel: Thanks all for hanging in there with me. It makes it so much more fun!...See MoreFamily Room Progress - Rug and Bookcase Options
Comments (27)funky: I just checked my chair and the cushions are not detachable. Squirrel suggested I ask Macys to move the chair on the floor over. You post a lot of good points and some I have been pondering myself and have come up with the same conclusion--limit red on the rug to an accent color. I've pretty much eliminated the first Karastan as the colors/pattern are too similar to the chair. I do like some black accents on the rug as well which is part of what I like about the RugsUSA and black Empress Kirman, though have been looking at overstock.com for other possibilities. Their pics are really not very good, though I've been reading the feedback. Perhaps I'm overthinking this? You know the rug I have there actually works really well, colorwise, I think, and perhaps I should look for something similar in a larger size. It's amazing its a cheap $50 rug made of olefin I picked up last year from MacFruguals as a temporary solution until I could figure out what I wanted to do with the rug. I rotated it and moved the chair to the other corner to get a feel for some of the changes we are considering. I must say that the first Macy's bookcase with the sliding door will really work better if I decide to put a chair here as with a 52" wide bookcase the door clearance needed for the Old World bookcase to open the left door will be partially blocked by the chair. If I move the chair any further to the right then it blocks the view of the TV when sitting at the sectional. I still lean towards the Old World one in terms of styling though and am thinking I could put the books we actually look at on the right side and more decorative items, books we do not look at often on the left. DH doesn't think we really need a chair here anyway, though I think it looks nice. Do you think either one would work? It'll probably come down to when DH and I go to Macys and he can see IRL....See MoreFamily Room Progress - Sofas are here!
Comments (24)Thanks all for the kind words! It's so nice to get something RIGHT. I smile every time I walk by the room:) I'm still mulling over the 'sophisticated' comments - that hadn't necessarily been in the plans! My goal is to have something serene, quiet and comfortable. We have loved how the this area in the kitchen turned out; that's why we selected the same window for in here. Thanks trailrunner, indygo-girl, marti8a, loribee, sas95, mtnrdredux, romy718, gssciencechick, melsouth. I'm getting there slowly gooster! holly-kay - Regarding the fireplace - I'm still not sure what I will do. Thanks for remembering my timberframe mantel plans :) MarinaGal - you are so right about the layout! It's been a one sofa room for 16 years and lovely to be able to take (hopefully) better advantage of the space. msrose, SparklingWater - we've used the same wall color as the kitchen in here, BM Aura Vancouver Day, with 25% on the ceiling (first time I've ever used color on a ceiling and I like the effect). kellinoelle - the big window has made a huge difference. laurie_2008 - thanks, we continued the same woodwork/trim we had in the rest of the house. joaniepoanie - exactly! It's really not looking too shabby for a more or less empty room :) Now if I can just keep the old Hippocratic oath in mind as I keep going (First, Do No Harm...)...See MoreDIY Family Room on a Budget Reveal Before/After Pics
Comments (33)The overall look is vastly improved, you've done a wonderful job. My only caveat is the TV wall, which looks too busy for a room that has a busy (although very nice) rug. I would streamline that wall extensively, and consider doing something different in the hallway where there are the three round objects. I would also eliminate the pouf by the chair, and reconsider the vertical row of pictures, which might look better placed horizontally in the hall. This is all minor stuff, the new look is awesome!...See MoreAnne
