Tart plum tree suggestions for Zone 5
Comments (11)nobueno, I have had no trouble with hardiness of Japanese plums here in Denver. The issue is not hardiness but bloom time; we usually get frosts that kill the blooms. I have Elephant Heart and Satsuma and my neighbor has Santa Rosa. We have had good crops the last few years. The European plums, especially my Shropshire Damson, bloom later and therefore avoid the frosts. I would have to say that it sounds like you are wanting a Santa Rosa. You will need a pollinator for it though. A Japanese hybrid would work well. But you should be prepared in case of frost at bloom time....See MoreTree suggestions for zone 5 planting
Comments (6)Hackberries have yellow fall color, interesting bark, and will reseed themselves. Sugar maples, as well as red and white oaks do well on well drained sites. Some sugar maples turn yellow/red/orange, others just yellow. Some oaks have beautiful colors, others just brown leaves that hang on. But even that is interesting in the winter when everything else is bare. Mix in some white pine for added winter color. Just north of here in the Wisconsin Dells area you often see white pine growing in the deciduous forest. I don't recommend red, Austrian, or Scotch pine. Too many problems. White spruce is another possibility. Avoid ash for now with the EAB problem. Aspen groves have beautiful yellow fall color and grow fast and will spread in a natural area. American basswood is another native tree with yellow fall color....See Morered leafed trees zone 5-6 suggestions
Comments (2)Maybe purpleleaf choke cherries can grow there. Otherwise maybe a modern, disease-resistant purpleleaf crab cultivar. With rose family trees like this it always depends on what the pest and disease situation is in a particular locale. Or maybe you want something taller and more grand. How big do you want?...See MoreNorth IL Zone5 - What fast shade tree please
Comments (21)Wow, this post is going in 15 directions at once. My ADD is kicking in! :) To answer your question (about 10 posts ago) a Sunset Maple is a type of Red Maple. So yes, it is the same species that is in your front yard. Growers have tweeked the wild Red Maples to have faster growth, prettier color in the Fall, longer lasting color, more intense color, earlier or later color changing, etc. etc. A bit like Gerraniums at the greenhouse. Different colors, the tendency not to be woody, etc. but still Gerraniums. The same with Apple trees for example. Lots of different types, but still Apples. And admittedly, a lot of this is to sell more Maples. Other varieties or cultivars of Red Maples are "Autumn Blaze", "October Glory", "Pacific Sunset" and so forth. If you choose this tree do a google search or see pics at your local nursery. Please forgive the jargon "specimen tree". It is just a name for your "centerpiece", most eye catching, or the one you're most proud of tree in your yard. The nurseries have a ton to choose from, it was so fun to pick ours out this year. Admittedly, we did it based on the shape and health of the tree, not the cultivar. With Summer coming on, I might recommend waiting to plant in the Fall though. Or if you do it, do it soon!...See Moregle2011
