Honed hex marble tile cleaning?

HI. I recently did my master bath over in carrera marble. I absolutley love it and I knew going in that maintenace would be a pain, but I risked it. A few spots have shown up on my floor and although I have been careful about using products in there, I wonder if its water that dried? regardless, does anyone have suggestions on what I can use on honed marble to clean it safely? regular soap and water did not work. Can i use a light abrasive sponge?

Those are etches and scratches. Cleaning will not remove them. That is what patina looks like. A lot of personal care products will etch marble, from hair spray to skin care solutions. It is what it is.

I just read this posting so I cannot vouch for the hint concerning safety for grout and tile. There are before and after pictures using Woolite Carpet Foaming cleaner: http://www.aberrysweetlife.com/2013/05/cleaning-tile-grout-with-carpet-cleaner.html I have cleaned floor tile grout that looked like various shades of black grout in an apartment my son rented...gross! The only thing that made any impact was straight laundry bleach and a scrub brush which was not healthy to breathe and, I suspect, not exactly good for the grout. However, if an owner was okay renting an apartment with white grout that was grimy black after the apartment had supposedly been cleaned, I was okay with getting it white again even if it took bleach. The place definitely looked better when he left than when he moved in.

Positano-- Sorry this is a little late-- I didn't see your reply when you posted it. But in answer to it, you might want to read a thread that Stacey posted over at "that other tile forum" (GW won't let me post the name for some reason or a link) called Help solve MYSTERY? Marble tile shower floor always "wet" in some areas?. To this day, I still don't know what caused the problem, nor does anyone else, no matter WHAT they (Artistic Tile) say. No one can prove to me what the problem was, and every possibility that's been suggested, I can tear apart technically speaking. Even one of the top forensic experts in the country (Dave Gobis) got in on this, and couldn't come up with a definitive answer. One thing I DO know for sure, though. I was skeptical about sealing the floor to start with, and after it was sealed, moisture had trouble excaping the stone, and it stayed dark in areas. After I tore it up and redid it, Stacey left it unsealed, and she's had no discoloration problems (or any others, that I know about!) since.

Thanks for responding Bill, but I kind of meant the opposite of what you responded to, meaning, is MARBLE mosaic not as good a choice in a shower as hex tile? I am trying to not blow the budget and while I loved the look of the nero marquina my concerns are due to price & durability. I think the impact of using the nero marquina on the bathroom floor will be great, but the shower is fairly small (about 3 foot sq.) so maybe I can get away with using a lesser expensive option there and in the 5x9 closet. (Then again, if there's a way I can use the nero marquina as just an accent, maybe as a 4x4 border around the room, with the black hex or mosaic in the center/shower/closet? Or a white hex in the center/shower/closet? I am rambling. Basically, I don't want to do the closet in the nero marquina because of cost, that's the bottom line. If I do choose to use it in 4x4 diamond or running bond on the floor, mosaic running bond in the shower, what (cheaper option!) do I choose for the closet?

I had marble hex tiles on my shower and 2 bathroom floors and I would not install marble it again. I had large format hex on the floor and small hex in the shower, and basketweave marble in our other bathroom. The basketweave held up the best. With the hex tiles in the shower, we had all the issues with staining, efflorescence, rust spots upon installation and were worried that the marble was totally ruined and we'd have to rip it out. The rust spots eventually faded, but after use, the marble didn't hold up well. I don't think marble is meant for a wet environment.

I just got this. I'm going to try it on my polished marble mosaic floor. It says that some people like to clean the marble first, and then a few coats of this, but I thought it was a one-step deal.

Will let you know how it turns out.

Don’t use harsh abrasive cleaning products that may damage the tiles.It is advisable to hire professional cleaners as they know the techniques for cleaning the tiles smoothly without any damage.They can use the right cleaning method to remove the stains and odor from the tiles.

The beauty of marble is it is a living surface so to speak. Acid erodes the talc in it so those "water marks" are etched surfaces and light hits them differently then the honed surface, which is still a slight unified "polishing"technique. You can use tin oxide to polish out the etch marks but as soon as they fade a new one will appear. Rather than fight the nature of marble embrace its patina. It is chosen for its "timeless, classic" appeal and that appeal is its worn beauty in reality.
