Comments (13)Can't say I have ever smelled worms. Julie, you're just a wealth of adventurous thoughts! And did someone say Cocoa? I have chocalate mint, Sharry Baby orchid(with cocoa fragrance, 95% of the cookies I make are chocolate, I put extra cocoa in my chocolate pudding, I don't understand white cakes, cocoa goes into my chile(Oops! Cat's out of the bag!), and I brought back â¤30 worth of the best dark chocolate from Europe. My favorite color is brown, and I am eating Nestles semi-sweet chocolate chips(and almonds) and drinking cocoa as I write this. Never thought I'd say this, but, Suzy-can I come over for an iris sniff sometime? And my favorite garden smell is . . . drum roll please . . . cloves(!), from my Crandall clove currant. Comments (11)I have no idea what type of forger-me-nots showed up. They are pretty with blue flowers! And I have no idea what type of cat-o-nine tales I killed off. Though I do know we have conservation land on the other side of the river, and there is lots of cat-o-nine tails over there. (And I would much prefer the wildlife to stay on that side of the river!) The pond is nice. But expensive. I never realized how much work was involved to keep it as a pond, and not allow it to become a swamp! The fish friendly herbicides cost a small fortune. And it really limits what other fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides you can use on your property - so you have to buy the fish friendly ones of those as well. The pond has been having a tough year. We flooded back in the storms in March/April. The pond rose about 3-4 feet. All the runoff caused a fish kill. Then in early May, a 60' pine tree fell and landed in the pond. Which resulted in another fish kill. We had to have the tree removed, and the pond dredged from that. Now with the drought, the water level is a good foot below normal. Which means that it has lost it's normal inflow/outflow. So I'm not sure what type of impact that is going to have. At this point, we think we have wiped out most of the invasive plants. And we are trying to restore native plantings. We're hoping to get a little dock built this fall - just a little platform to sit on and watch the fish, frogs, and turtles. And to have a nice place to sit to put your skates on....See Morea little OT ..you know who you are ....
Comments (24)I am ready to work out in the yard too. Last week it was pretty nice but then of course over the weekend we had mostly rain. My lawn is like a swamp back there, the groundwater level is so high from all the snow and recent melt off. But...my bulbs are starting to grow and I can see the tulips, daffodils, hyazinths, crocuses, iris and alliums peeking through the ground... Over the weekend I was soooooo mad...because my crocuses were just getting ready to bloom and along came 'some-bunny' and ate them all...:( I really like my decorating bunnies much better then the real on that frequents my backyard...at least they won't eat my flowers...lol I am still a beginner when it comes to gardening...we moved into this house about 2 years ago...it had existing landscaping...a bit too formal for me...but it was nice...so the first year I didn't do much...last year was a major remodel year...inground pool was completly remodeled...addition was added...I created some more flowerbeds in the backyard and planted some grasses and mostly bulbs in the fall....this year will be the year to add the patio that connects the addition and the old patio...and planting perrenials and deciding on a new design for the landscaping in the front of the house...I will probably ask alot of questions during the planting season...I manage ok with creating potted arrangments but I am not sure how well I'll do creating gardens...LOL...See MoreRuss Barnard
