@Paula Steiner scented rose blooms last a shorter period of time compared to those with no scent. If you have read of a rose having a "heavy petal substance", that was code to exhibitors that the rose would last a long time when cut and likely be suitable for exhibition. Scent is either expressed by the petals or the stamen. In modern roses, it's mainly the petals. The oils and alcohols which comprise scent arise from "petioles", pores on the petal surfaces. These oils and alcohols are very chemically active and heat up to allow for the scent to be expressed. Petals with heavy "substance" have a heavy wax surface or skin which covers the petioles, preventing any possible oils and alcohols from reacting and becoming scent. If you want a cut flower which lasts a long time in vase; can withstand a lot of handling and endure shipping, you want the heavy petal substance (hence, lack of scent) so your product arrives in good shape and lasts a long while once received. Yes, there are florists who sell scented roses, however their fragrant blooms do NOT last AS long as cut flowers as those possessing no scent. Yes, there ARE "florist" and "exhibition" roses with scent, however, they do NOT last as long cut as those without scent. What's the use of a rose that doesn't smell like a rose? A commercial product you can actually advertise will arrive in a good retail shape after shipment; which will endure being worked into a floral arrangement and be in retail ready shape and last a week to ten days in a vase if properly cared for. Or, a rose you can cut at 3 AM from the garden in the dark; shove in an ice chest and drive several hours to a rose show, then abuse and molest it to look the way you desire and last in less than ideal conditions until judges finish picking it apart.

I can't think what I miss---unless it's birds in the garden. I miss spring and summer. I miss warmth. I miss having fresh food. I know what gives me a kick, though, about spring. Like Paul---baby leaves---shiny, soft, unblemished, satiny---especially the columbine. (Around September, I hate the columbine foliage.) I love being outdoors at night in the spring when it's warm, and loud with cricket/frog noises. I miss that.

What's the most you've spent on a single hosta?

Hey Tom, I'm in Toronto and would be interested in the name of a good local Hosta seller. My most expensive Hosta's are Hanky Panky @ $35. It's a nice hosta in the spring but not too impressive for much of the year in my garden, looks ratty early on. I also paid $35 for a small 2 eyed Touch of Class. Later in the season I got a large 3 eyed TOC for $25. The 2 eyed $35 one came back as 2 eyes the following season, the $25 3 eyed one came back as a n 11 eyed giant the following season.

What will you miss the most about the house you are selling?

I'll miss our very bright and cheery Cape Cod home which we've decked out south Florida-style with lots of colorful plants and light green paint with white trim. Our house makes us SO happy when we're inside but alas it doesn't so much when we look around and see that we're the only ones keeping up our house. Walks around the neighborhood have become so much of a downer. Our new house is a 20-minute walk to the white sand beaches of the Gulf and the neighborhood is so quiet you could hear a pin drop. It's a tiny old beach house and it's just itching for our cottage touches. I can't wait to see what we'll do with it, so I'll miss our house but look forward to trying out some new landscaping! Jane

Yes! Good old earthy smelling dirt! Preferable black and rich. And lilacs.... won't be long though. And I'm forcing myself to stop with two :-)

One flower, two smells:
iris, the SDB "Nut Ruffles" thats so intrigueing and hard to describe....kind of like cocoa or chocolate with a hint of sweetnes. The other is the lavendar one that smells really sweet-kind of grapey
What a lovely thread. It heightens the anticipation.....gosh I get hopped up about spring!

Right now- I want to smell worms-
You know- the smell of wet dirt and earthworms- usually accompanied by a warm shower-
I know it is silly- but that is the smell that awakens and stirs my whole being in the spring......

I'm happy - I was unmulching my rose bed yesterday and my crocus are starting to bloom. The sun was so nice and warm and I bent over to a faceful of sweet crocus scent and lightly bruised creeping thyme.

Can't say I have ever smelled worms. Julie, you're just a wealth of adventurous thoughts!

And did someone say Cocoa? I have chocalate mint, Sharry Baby orchid(with cocoa fragrance, 95% of the cookies I make are chocolate, I put extra cocoa in my chocolate pudding, I don't understand white cakes, cocoa goes into my chile(Oops! Cat's out of the bag!), and I brought back â¤30 worth of the best dark chocolate from Europe. My favorite color is brown, and I am eating Nestles semi-sweet chocolate chips(and almonds) and drinking cocoa as I write this.

Never thought I'd say this, but, Suzy-can I come over for an iris sniff sometime?

And my favorite garden smell is . . . drum roll please . . .

cloves(!), from my Crandall clove currant.

seriously, it's wonderful and I can give you a heads-up when it's sniffin time. (I can just imagine that people would wonder "who IS that guy that's been lying on Suzy's sidewalk all afternoon"
I have heard people wax poetic over the smell of trailing arbutus. I'd really love to experience that. Does Eloise Butler have it growing?

And I guess some of us had better plan on bringing chocolate to Rick's place for the plant swap feed..... In case anyone didn't notice... he seems to really like chocolate :-)

But none of that namby-pamby stuff (i.e. milk chocolate). I like unadulterated, DARK chocolate.

I think there is trailing arbutus at Eloise Butler, but I don't know where.

And Suzy, I really would appreciate a heads-up for a sniff-and-snooze. I'll bring my own pillow.
