A non orchid destination is tulum. A great market for mayan art at good prices. The ruins there are to behold. But pay the modest price for a guide, It becomes more meaningful.

An inland trip from tulum is to go to Coba. They have a nice hotel there with good food. There is a ruin of a Mayan city. I was there35 years ago and was impressed. Then it was more of a work in progress.

It turns out Jardin Botanico was a 15 min taxi ride from my hotel, thanks for the tip Harvey.

I went early in the morning, I was the only visitor and there were only 2 employees I could see. It was cool to have the place to myself but as I got to the middle of the park I was a little nervous that if something happened to me it would be quite a while for someone found me. The place was a bit over grown an every few steps there would be a lizard, snake or bird running across the trail.

Sadly the place was badly neglected. Most of the display plants were dead or over grown.

There is a family of spider monkeys living in the park which I came across. It was awesome to see these guys in the wild

The only flowering orchid I found was a Brassavola cuculata

There were others along the trails some with tags and some without that may have been wild

This was an orchid growing with an epiphyllum cactus.

There was this rickety rope bridge that you had to climb an even more rickety tower to get to which gave an Indiana Jones feeling to the trip.

I wish this guy had been in flower

There were also lots of beautiful birds all around and there was a sweet scent in the air which made the walk pleasant.

There was also a medicinal plant area which listed oncidium micranthum as a plant used by the Mayans but it didn't say what for.

There was also no one around to ask questions.

It took about 2 1/2 hours to walk the park, it was a nice way to spend the morning. It doesn't look like they get many visitors, the tour guide at the hotel didn't even know about it and it's only a few miles away. It seems that the place could use some help

I also went to the Xcaret theme park which has an orchid section.

The park is beautifully designed. There are some animal exibits, Mayan culture exibits and swimming/ snorkeling attractions.

Everything was designed to look natural except the orchid house. It was nice but everything was potted and on benches. They had mostly noid hybrids

This one did have a tag- Epid. di Fussum, which is how it was written on the tag

This was a interesting combo of Cattleya and bromeliads

They also had a large propagation room filled with flasks and another filled with seedlings and com-pots.

On my way out at the end of the day I noticed they were selling small flasks for about $10 US. I didn't have time to look through them and I wasn't sure about customs so I passed.

I wish we had more like this very interesting.
