Just starting with our weird kitchen--please help!

I am attaching our weirdly-shaped kitchen. we're combining the current kitchen and dining room together and it leaves us with an odd shape. The window on the right wall is where I'd hoped to put the sink, but because of the placement of the sliding doors there is only room for 18 inch depthcabinetry--not enough for ANY appliances. So....do we put all the appliances--dishwasher, sink and gas stove--on the island? Where does an eat-in kitchen go? Should we do a build in banquette along the 8 foot wall? Ideas appreciated. Please ask any questions as i know this is rough.

well, we were thinking french doors wouldbe nice but we have cats and dogs who would run outside. and the french doors are $$$.

this sketch is based on removing a wall between what is now the kitchen on the left and what is now the DR on the right. but my husband just looked under the siding and it looks like it's concrete block and IMMOVABLE. arg. so that changes everything. I am attaching what i think will be the layout once the engineer gets a look at it--my guess is he will tell us we can't remove the wall or the house will fall down. that would be bad. i put in where i thought cabinets and an island could go.

pantry could go along 8 foot wall (obv not the whole length) and sink and dishwasher in the island. Maybe on the far side?

Check out this link. If you haven't seen it already this guide is wonderful and has most if the info you are looking for. Most of the images show water shortage. Not disease. Perhaps occurred suddenly, as in windy; extreme high temps that burst in on a hot spell; very low humidity; too small a pot (are they in pots?)

Joy--The floors in the picture are about 5 years old. The new floors will be lighter at first, but will reach that same color in probably only a few months. We shouldn't have a problem feathering in the new wood and creating a new transition. Ptamom--thanks for the compliment on the cabinets. And I know exactly what you're saying about stuff shattering on tile. That's definitely a drawback. We haven't chosen a backsplash yet, but would gravitate toward lighter if we choose the wood floor. ca_mom--the cabs aren't Brazilian cherry and the floors are at their aged color, so unfortunately that's how they will look together 5 years from now. But, yes, the wood is a bit cheaper and the installation is a lot cheaper than tile. That's a bonus! Chinchette--Thanks for the alternate view. It's such a nice space (love your ceramic gecko!), and it's nice to see how well it works with the wood and tile right next to each other. I was speaking to the associate at the tile store yesterday and she too said to NOT put any type of threshold/transition strip between the two. Now that I see yours, it makes sense!

I missed KentC's post, but agree with it, too. Samarnn, it is taking my drawing too literally as it's not a suggestion of color or texture. It is predominantly a scheme of arranging, and to some degree size, although that comes with some pretty broad leeway. Color, texture, plant personality & other details are characteristics that will be products of whatever plants the owner chooses. I'm just trying to get them in the ball park. (... A ball park that is different than the de facto standard skinny evergreens at house corners connected by a hedge across the front.) I think you bring up a good point, though .... that having everything be fine textured is NOT an ideal. Some boldness & courseness as part of the scheme is a good thing and adds interest.

Does this space need to have a DR table too? It may be more productive to have an engineer come out and figure out what space you can reasonably have to work with before committing yourself to a layout.

yes we want a table in there, but a small one. an engineer is coming but we are pretty sure that this is what we will be working with.

If you must keep the wall, you could have a wide galley. I think you
could have the sink and DW under the window, with shallow pantries on
the ends, as long as there is space to swing out around the base
cabinets. Actually you could make the base cabinets extra deep, and have deeper drawers with more storage. Then pull the bases on the fridge wall out flush with the fridge box.

The current kitchen could be a walk in pantry, or an old
fashioned built-in dining nook. If you make it into a pantry a small
table could be pushed against the wall by the slider.

You need to find out what your walls and foundations are to see if anything at all can be cost effectively moved.
