Question on Subway Tile Backsplash

Is there a standard convention for how to install subway tile in the overhang area of the counter top to that of the wall cabinets? The counter overhangs the base cabinet by 1.5 inches, so there is a 1.5 inch gap to the wall cabinet. Do you bring the tile plumb to the wall cabinet leaving the tile short of the counter edge....or do you jut out the tile to make it plumb to the counter?

I've seen both, I really prefer the look when the tile ends flush with the cabinet.

My preference: (although that's the wrong tile for that counter. Yikes.)

rufinorox - loving my range!!! The micro is nice too, but having to get used to having only 1000 watts. My old one was 1100 & I notice the difference. I keep checking to see if you installed your backsplash - can't wait to see it. I don't know what to tell you about the edging. I guess its a matter of preference. Honestly, I'm not even sure my tile came with a matching bullnose edging - I'm sure it did at one time, but I bought it on close out & wasn't even thinking about that. I was just so happy it was priced in my budget since it was love at first sight lol!! I just lucked out that I liked that straight edge look :) Andy - sorry to hijack - - let us know what you decide!

Thanks so much for your response! I started looking again tonight and found the tiles at the link below. This wasn't where I originally saw them, but it's the tile I was thinking of (6"x 2.5"(3D) - Stainless Steel Tiles about 1/3 of the way down). Now to decide if that's truly what I want... Hi Katieob! SO sorry! I don't check the boards that often anymore. The tile we have is marble, its called Thassos by AKDO and it's a 3"x 6" brick (not on mesh). It's a little thicker and beveled edge. And, it went up really fast and easy! It is "grouted" but we cheated a bit and just used the premixed caulk type tubes of grout because I didn't want to clean out those deep bevel grooves with typical grout. It came out really well. Nice! If you can't contact the designer of the kitchen in the photo, you could probably make your own mix. Try Fireclay for the colors (free samples online, but if you're in the bay area, go to a showroom).

In your case, I'd take it to the edge of the counter.

eta: I'm changing my answer. I just looked at mine and it ends at the cabinet with a little less space than yours.

I think your eye should follow in a straight line from the cabinet itself to the counter, ignoring the light rail. An inch or so without tile for the counter overhang is very common.

Sounds like the consensus is to end the tile flush with the cabinet...and that means the actual cabinet, not including the protruded light rail.

Tile is was made by Encore, color is crackle ice.
