Ground cover plants with roses zone 8+
Comments (5)Dee, I love dianthus. It's very manageable in that it makes a fairly small mound about 2' or less wide. When it's past its prime, I just give it a haircut, and it grows back blooming. It is a year-around plant, staying green in 18 degree temps and 95 degrees with all the humidity Florida can muster. It comes in lots of colors - white, pink, maroon, fuscia, red, red/white, pink, pink/white, etc. Strawberries sound interesting. I may try them. I like taller plants among the roses. Salvia farinacea is a nice, soft plant that doesn't get overbearing and doesn't spread, and the flowers are a glistening sky blue. It also comes back in the spring! I love coreopsis 'Early Sunrise', but it multiplies/spreads very quickly. Dividing it is very easy though and you get free plants out of it. I also have lots of daylilies. Comments (18)As soon as I read your question, I thought daylilies. I see a couple other people already suggested this but if you're doing this like a poll, here's another vote. Only problem with these is the VAST possibilities of colors and heights. You would really want to see the exact blooms of the particular plant to know for sure. In general, though, I would go with a bold shade of whatever color I like to contrast the softness (pastel-ness?) of the lavender & moonbeam. I thought the dianthus suggestion was also a good one since the foliage is interesting even when it's not in flower and you probably look at these plants around your patio a lot. Many dianthus will also have that wonderful spicy carnation smell, too. I think it would bloom before the lavender and moonbeam, but confirm that with folks in your area before accepting it as fact. Daylilies would probably bloom around the same time?...See MoreNew USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map
Comments (18)Albuquerque is zone 7A, but the same zones out west, particularly in the southwest, are just not the same as here in New England. For one thing, they get more sunshine hours because they are further south, and many more days of sunshine, because they don't get the storm systems and clouds very often the way we do. And finally, they get many milder breaks between the cold weather periods, again presumably because they are further south (means more hours of sunlight) and get so many more days of sunshine anyway. That means that it gets drier, and also the ground seldom freezes, and even if it does, it's not for long. St. George, UT and Cape Cod, MA are both zone 7A. I've been to St. George, and there are palm trees all over town. And not just the hardy ones like Windmill palms, which are zone 7 anyway, but even the Washingtonias. But I am sure that there is no way you will see them all over the Cape! It's the same zone, but a totally different climate. That's why I say zones are a guide, but ultimately it's up to each of us to try (or not try) to grow whatever we want, within reason. So no coconuts in Providence, but I do have camellias and Clerodendron. Not supposed to grow here, but the plants apparently haven't been told that, so they are fine!...See MoreWhat plants, especially fragrant plants, can I plant for a Moon Garde
