Carrier Heat Pump Package unit
Comments (8)We have a Carrier heat pump and have found then less than responsive to consumer concerns. Our heat pump (with 2 compressors) has major concerns with the compressors. We've replaced them once already and now they are not working again. The repairman has not a clue and has spent hours trying to get them to work in tandem. We contacted Carrier and they said to contact a dealer/repairman....See MoreNeed two new Heat Pumps - comparing Trane / Carrier / Lennox
Comments (3)Sylvia Non coastal location? I prefer a small dealer where owner is actively involved in business, sales and service/repair. Not a fan of Lennox heat pumps. Here is my checklist. Correct sizing is important for comfort and operating cost. there are three equally important components-quality HVAC, the install by dealer, and probably the most overlooked and disregarded is the ductwork system. these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset 10 yr warranty compressor and parts AHRI matching number for the system quoted you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant. Depending on location and winter climate, I would not purchase a new HP system that did not have electronic demand defrost feature. Electronic demand defrost eliminates unnecessary, nuisance, and expensive defrost calls. Not important though for your location. Trane and it's dealers do think highly of the brand, sometimes a little too much. Look at their sister brand, American Standard that is very similar and usually priced better. Comments (7)I never really noticed the noise of the previous equipment, nor do I notice the noise of the current equipment, probably because the 2hp pool pump near them makes more noise than all of them put together (to be replaced with an energy efficient variable speed pump next month). I guess I'm happy with it, but I'll let you know in five years. Wife is not happy that new line sets were run up the outside of the house, even though they're covered (copper in walls was too small diameter)....See MoreReplacing 30 Year Old Heat Pump
Comments (1)First thing you should have done is have your ductwork looked at to determine correct sizing (can cause performance efficiency issues if undersized) and then have a heat load calc done to determine what size equipment you need. Few ductwork systems are properly sized for 5 ton units, and this can cause less efficiency and less comfort overall. Does/did the unit run short cycles? Has it always maintained indoor temp? The unit should run constantly on the hottest days, and if it does, it may be that you need a 5 ton unit, but I do suggest having proper calculations done. That said, it seems like your winters are within heat pump operating range. It may not be cost effective to go with a gas furnace as backup heat if it's used less than a month out of the year, and even at that only some of the day. It's up to you; if your electric costs are high, and you run a comparison and see that it would provide savings, an 80% AFUE gas backup may be the way to go. I'll let others give you their thoughts on that, but I don't think another heat pump would be a bad idea, especially an efficient, properly-sized one. With respect of brands, multiple manufacturers have good systems on the market; the most important thing is finding the best dealer to install the equipment and do the right things (above). Trane, York, Lennox, Rheem, etc......See Moretigerdunes
