I will use a cut piece of pvc pipe to the height I want. Or rocks.

Dave, i will often use a small saucer upside down inside a larger saucer. Works great.

It's a 1x1x1 plastic channel molding used for various applications when installing vinyl siding. You can buy it at any big box home improvement store. I cut it to length on a chop saw/motorized miter box. It's only a few dollars per length.

Hey what a great thread! Al - Your technique is really intriguing, however I have had zero luck with finding the 1x1x1 channel at the Ol BBS's. Despite looking, all I am able to find is plastic J-Channel pieces (near siding materials); they are similar yet have a small flat piece extending on one side.

Huh? I thought flushing involved pouring water into the plant from above via a tap or watering can. Something you would do outside or in the bath. I just use my water butt if I water that way.

I often use wine corks or short sections of wooden dowel.

i like to flush with every watering. Not just watering in sips and occasionally flushing, but pouring enough in that 15-20% comes out the bottom.

This is how you can achieve that without having your plants sit in water in the saucer.

Maybe it's that I grow mostly succulents, but I don't feel any need to flush my plants out like that, not even the tropical, houseplant types. I water the tropicals to overflow & that's enough for me.

I set my plants on a mayo or peanut butter jar lid (washed and facing down) placed in the middle of the saucer. If it's a large pot, I use a couple of them.

I put a plastic covered rack over my sink with a strainer below and flush them that way. I'm growing all mine indoors, mostly on windowsills. it would be a disaster if I watered/flushed in situ.

i am looking at this thread for better ideas on keeping them off the saucer to increase air flow, however. I'm using Ikea plastic chip clips right now :-P

Plastic bottle caps...one can pick matching colors :) - that's if one doesn't drink wine to get corks, lol

Al - here is the closest equivalent that I can find to your very neat & sturdy solution. These pieces from HD or Lowe's certainly do not have the same look...

Yeah - I looked and couldn't find the c-channel I have bought in the past listed at any of the big box stores. Bummer! If you had a tanble saw, it would be no trouble to rip the long leg off + the little hem on the short side so you end up with equal legs.

I like the channel because air can get under the it and dry up the water in the saucer, where things like mayo lids & stuff trap water under them or in them for extended periods, which can be not so good.
