Iceberg vs. Pope John Paul II
Comments (26)I've just started posting after lurking for many years. I've harrased my family and friends with flower pics for long enough, I thought I would go global. ;) Thank you so much for your sweet comments! Seil & jjpeace, I grew up in Michigan in zone 5 (at the time). I know exactly how hard growing roses there is! I remember my mom thought our roses were coming down with a dread disease that turned all our roses, one by one, year after year, into single dark red roses. I only discovered who the good Dr.Huey was after extensive research at the library (pre-Internet days). Where I am now, you don't have to be a great gardener to grow reasonable healthy roses. I will say though, there is nothing as beautiful as Michigan in the summer, all those lush green rolling hills, long days and colorful sunsets. :) Jjpeace, I'll post a pic of iceberg in spring if I can find one....See MorePope John Paul II blooms
Comments (9)Thank you so much everyone! Moses, I think that Pope John Paul II must be a good rose, and I do see signs of improvement in mine. It has struggled for four seasons, but it is planted near Firefighter, Francis Meilland and Julia Child which have struggled too, and they are also improving. Mine is grafted on Dr. Huey, so I don't have an opinion on how it would do own root. We've had relatively mild winters recently, but most hybrid teas are hardy in my zone. Mine hasn't gotten very big so far, and the canes have remained green, so I've pruned it very little. i do.believe PJPII is very vigorous for some. Maybe someone who has had better success than me will give their input. At this time I am very hopeful that mine will improve. It is one beautiful rose and very fragrant !...See MorePope John Paul II rose in UK
Comments (25)Darren, What! I have read* that the reason Pope John Paul II is not carried by the big rose houses in England is because its name brings anti-Catholic sentiment forward among some Englishmen. Such individuals would not purchase it for that reason. This lovely rose's name causing such a rejection leaves me dumbfounded. It was commented also that Thompson & Morgan, mostly a seed merchant, is the only source of it in England, an unusual situation.....a seed company selling a rose plant, and a controversial one, to boot. What further amazes me is that the decline in Christianity in Europe, churches becoming historical, architectural museums and tourist destinations, instead of houses of worship, would indicate to me that the populace's sentiments would cause them to care less about a rose being named in honor of a deceased Catholic patriarch. Sorry for your setback. Be patient Darren, and continue trying very hard to get Pope John Paul II. It is worth the effort. Try to get it grafted, if at all possible. I believe grafted, it will grow more vigorously, produce bigger and more abundant blooms. Comments (22)You might find Sugar Moon Grafted from a big box store. That is where I got mine. Btw, its growth habit is fairly upright if that helps with placement. Mine died back over winter, but that could have been the result of the root canker of which it eventually died. I buy for fragrance and this one is tops. My DH even made and exception for a white rose! : )) It's not as clean a white as PJP11 which I feel allows it to blend with others a bit more, and as I mentioned it has gorgeous stamens. I'll see if I can find an old pic. Actually, here is my original post with some good pics and others' comments. Ignore my placement of this rose as everything mentioned failed in this bed, but is thriving elsewhere (except SM : (( ). I eventually planted Ghislaine de Feligonde and it loves the spot. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4113178/sugar-moon-size-and-growth-habit-sun-needs#n=12...See MoreSara-Ann Z6B OK
