Huge Wasp Nest

I was just searching one of my best Monarch-attracting milkweed patches for eggs/caterpillars. I stood up to give my back a break, and came face to face with a big old wasp nest hanging at exactly nose level. Half a step closer and I would have knocked it with the back of my head. Fortunately, I don't panic easily, so I just stepped a few feet away and watched. Large black wasps are coming and going happily. It's a spot we rarely walk by, except when my husband mows. Mowing isn't really even necessary over there, since it is mostly deep, dry shade, and not close to the road, etc. I think I'll leave it and just warn people it's there so they can avoid it. Unfortunately, I know where any eggs and caterpillars will probably end up.

Does anyone know how quickly those get put together? I can't believe I didn't notice it before. But, I have been busy in other parts of the garden.
