First Time Gardener, questions...
Comments (4)Here's a hint I've heard alot. Put a can in the area that you are watering. You will need 1" of water per week, at least for my area. 10-15 minutes may not be enough "rain". I have also been guilty of putting 2lt bottles of water, upside down without cap, into the ground next to the plant that I want to grow, If the plant needs water, it will pull water from the bottle....See Morewhat herbs from seeds vs. cuttings?
Comments (4)From my experience: Tarragon - don't be fooled by seed catalogs, tarragon from seed won't be French Tarragon, so make sure you get a cutting or a plant. The leaves should smell of licorice to be the "real thing." Rosemary from seeds requires bottom heat, maintain the seed tray at or above 70 degrees to get germination. A slip cutting is MUCH easier to start, or get a plant from a local nursery. Marjoram, Oregano, or Mint - get a plant or a cutting, and check the flavor of the leaf. (there are lot of varieties and some are tastier than others) Lemon Verbena - buy a plant. Be prepared for it to make into a scraggly looking plant that drops its leaves easily and probably won't overwinter in your zone (never has here in zone 6b). I've stopped buying the plants as Lemon Balm grows like crazy here and is a more attractive looking plant. Cilantro, Parsley, Dill - all three of these can be started from seed, but its funny that the FIRST planting always seems to have spotty germination but if you let that plant go to seed and reseed freely into your garden you will never lack for plants again....See MoreFirst timer needs advice regarding watering
Comments (0)I have never grown a thing but decided over the weekend to start. I know the setup might look wacky (my wife was making fun of me when she got home from a weekend away) but humor me. I purchased a small grow light with a timer and some stackable pots. I put in 9 herbs along with some cherry tomatoes on the top pot. It is in the corner of my kitchen and to my amazement (I am new to this) they have already begun to grow. I was wondering about watering them. How often should I? A quick spray with a water bottle everyday? Also, should I dilute a little liquid fertilizer in the water bottle when I spray my plants? Any advice regarding my little experiment will be appreciated. Again, I know this isn't ideal but it's what I have right now so help me show my wife I'm not a total nut job....See MoreFirst timer needs advice regarding watering herbs
Comments (2)A cute setup but not for seed starting. It's for grown plants. Seedlings need a lot of light close to them or they will stretch their stems to get to the light. Not good. Also, seedlings need to be bottom watered, not from the top or they might develop damping off fungal infection and die really fast. They need moving air like a slightly open window or a fan. Maybe wait till spring and bring the fun pots outdoors to plant....See More- 7 years ago
