Pics of my First Ripe Volunteer from The Compost Heap

Neighbors said we couldn't grow tomatoes here, so we never tried. Grocery store tomatoes ended up in the compost pile, and that same compost was used to plant petunias.

One day, tomatoes started coming up in the middle of the petunias! We let them grow. They did sprawl. We were just happy that they were here.

DH was fishing all week out of state, and this was the first to turn, but it was on the ground under some big stems, and he got it out and it ripened on the counter. It's a plum type and I was at the grocery today. They have none this big.

So I cut it in half:
Worried that this is a no seed tomato, I sliced it. It's going in tonight's salad. SEEDS! But it's really a perfect paste tomato.

It has really good flavor, and there are more ripening on that plant, so it will be fun to see the difference between counter ripened and vine ripe!

Am I disappointed with my Compost Volunteers? Not this one! It's a keeper! I know the seeds won't bear true, but it's been a fun experiment.
