Thank you all for taking the time to respond. It is very helpful. Here is the Guilford Green sample. At night it looks much more apple green. I might have to lighten it just a bit, but I think I am going to use it. The room is a NE and NW exposure, so it's somewhat dark. I think the grayishness of this color is really needed to keep it from being too garish. I want a nod to 1930, but yes, they used some pretty intense colors back then! Now I'm having second thoughts about green cabinets/white walls vs. white cabinets/green walls. I posted that quandry over on the decorating forum... Since feedback seemed to be mixed, I decided to let my DD make the final decision. She kept asking me which desk I preferred, but I wouldn't tell her. She opted for the larger desk with more drawer space painted white paired with the Victorian chair. Loves the idea of the fabric bulletin board over the desk so I'll order extra fabric for that as well. Also loves the idea of a glass top where she can slide her artwork, pics and certificates underneath. Regarding the suggestions for a different room layout, believe it or not I've tried most all of them. Each one has pros and cons in a room this small. Bottom line, tho, is if I center the daybed under the window that leaves approx. 18" per side. Putting either the desk or dresser where the bookcase is now results in a blocked corner behind the bed since both are greater than 18" deep whereas bookcase is only 10" deep. So while the result I know is cramped on the desk/dresser wall, it really is quite functional--dresser adjacent to closet and desk adjacent to bookcase. lyban: "Funner" was quite popular among my middle DD's 8-th grade class last year; unfortunately their English teacher informed them it is NOT a word. Didn't stop them from using it tho... Computerkluz: Would love to see some pics of your desks. pamlipsest: Thanks for the info on the 30/70 ratio. That makes a lot of sense to me. ruthy1: What a great idea to mask off the inlay! mzdee: I love RAF too and have had great success as well when I refinished my DR chairs. bungalow_house: Aren't small rooms a pain to decorate? My middle DD's is even smaller (9x10) and has a bigger closet. Not too much I can do with that room either--but she's a teenager and really into floor decor (where everything seems to be all the time). So while younger DD's room is a tad crowded with furniture, at least she'll have space for everything plus a big open space in the middle. And yes, she (and I) can access each nightstand. One thing that did not make the cut is her stand up easle/white board--she was trying to figure out how set could squeeze it in between the bookcase and nighstand believe it or not. I told her I buy a white board to mount on the wall to the right of the bookcase and she can use the nighstand drawer for her pens and eraser, etc. les: A fake fur seat sounds so fun and comfy! I'm sure DD would love it. I'll have to look into some different fabrics. Can you recommend a good website for fabrics? I think DD wants to use the aqua dot fabric somewhere as well, but I can use it for her bulletin board. I was worried the cotton fabric wouldn't be sturdy enough so this sounds like a better option. The different colored drawers sound really fun and pretty also, but I plan to stick with just white and add color with fabrics and wall paint which are easier to change when she grows tired of it.

Very interesting feedback. I didn't mention in my first post but the wall tile in the bathroom will be porcelain but will have the "look" of marble. It is a fairly gentle pattern but because of the "marble", I think that will help with toning down the "modern" a bit. I also like Joanne's suggestion about using wood. I think I can do something with my choice of flooring that can make the floor be a moderating factor as she suggests. trailrunner: - I think your comments have convinced me to go with asian rugs. I've been struggling with this and thinking about going with more contemporary rugs but seems like the rugs are a good way to add the traditional element leaving some room to do contemporary/eclectic with the furnishings. I may even look for an "asian" bathmat for the bathroom. I bet they exist somewhere. I also think besides going with wood or wood look on the floor in bathroom, there will be a rather tall floating cabinet against one wall -- I had been looking at Ikea for this but this would be a good opportunity to bring in something less modern. So the main modern elements will be the floating fixtures and floating vanity (sink will be drop in) with a less modern floor and cabinet. I may pay particular attention to the sconces on each side of the medicine cabinet. I can see how accessories can make a huge difference. Thanks everyone! I have hope it won't be a freakish experience for a visitor to walk from the main part of house into the hall bath.

Great job. I envy you the opportunity to refinish the floors before you move in. I have 2" wood blinds on most of my windows because they offer the best combination of privacy/light control and preserving the view out. With the slats tipped slightly up, I can block the direct sun and still see my garden. My office has mahogany wood 2" slats and does a pretty good job of darkening the room when closed and blocking the afternoon sun. Other rooms have slightly off-white blinds, and particularly in my BR, they don't darken the room as well as I'd like. Because they're inside mounted, I can't put a roller behind, and permanently installed wood valances prevent heavy drapes from being pulled back off the glass completely, so I used semi-sheers (and a sleep mask). The other downside is dust. They're hard to keep clean, though the dark ones show dust more than the light colored ones. If I had to do it over, I might go with all light colors in a faux wood and no decorative tapes, to make them easier to clean.
