Kohler Stages 45" users: cabinet and ledge configuration

Hi all,

Im trying to figure out if it's possible to have the trash on the left and ledge on the right without needing a huge base cabinet for the sink, wasting precious storage. My dishwasher will be to the right of the sink and I wanted the ledge on the right. Trash will be on left. Any creative ideas of how to configure this?

I used a 36" base for the sink and put the ledge over an adjacent cabinet. Will post pics tomorrow.

rjr, Yes yes. I did see and read this a couple of weeks ago, this is what began my research into the kohler. I went to a showroom and saw the 33 inch one and loved it, but know I would want and need the 45. So glad you are enjoying it. Your soapstone is absolutely stunning. So, you weren't afraid of all the talk about scratches and such? I'm still deciding between a princess white granite (sort of resembles marble) and/or quartz. All these decisions are mind boggling. I think I have made a decision and wham! I'm back at the starting gate. Either way, this forum is a godsend. thanks for the note back! :) Donna

I hadn't thought of that at all. That's an interesting idea! I think what will be stored in the twelve inches to the left of the dishwasher will be ziplock bags and aluminum foil and dish soap and the like. I wonder if a pull out or a side openning door would be better for that? Hmm. For the twelve inches next to the exterior door in the range run, I'm thinking that's where I will store the dog food. Seems like a pull out with trash can would be good? But maybe a regular cabinet would be cheaper and since I would only be accessing it twice a day? Thank you!

Yes, when I say it started with the sink, I did mean it quite literally. The first thing that bothered me about our kitchen when we moved in was the sink. But if you replace the sink, you really need to replace the counters and the faucet, and it would be a good time to replace the dishwasher. If you are going to replace the counters, then you might as well think about making any other changes... which lead to moving the range and adding a cabinet, and so it goes. I think the other thing about a sink is that it's something that you use all the time. Constantly. It seems like everything in a kitchen revolves around the sink. And that's probably why if you have room, two sinks are a good idea. But I will be happy just to get this one large sink installed. And I hope by starting with it, everything else will fall into place.

We too are going the 'let's fully use our marble' Nightowl. Champagne, gin and tonics,. Beer, red wine. Etc. all poured into glasses with no worries as to possible etches. We have only had ours a week and have thirty or fourth etches. All teeny splash marks. Don't care one bit. Even my hubby is fine with it. And everyone who said in my research phase, that you can't see etches until you look a certain way ( head nearly on counter tilted sideways, and who does that and doesn't worry that the men in white coats are going to come and cart them away to a pink padded room) love it. Soooo pleased we plumped for it. bbtrix, the only thing that makes me doubt my marble is your wooden island top. Wow! Everytime I see it it gives me butterflies in my stomach and I can't stop staring and finally the op, beachem, I don't think you'll have a problem reaching my daughter is 5'2" and one of the others is 4'7" ( they are 18 and 13) can reach our tap easily ( Kohler Vinnata) the karbon looks very user friendly and movable and LOVING my stages 45 it was a last min splurge had a 100cm Belfast in order but the delivery company messed up four times with its delivery so we finally had enough then I sweet talked dh into the stages. Was easier than I thought

The only way to not have a huge base cabinet (48"+) under this sink is to use a 36" base + a 15 or 18" base, but not a DW. A DW needs to come up to the underside of the counter top. It will not fit under the ledge. This is what we did, but of course the the whole set up can be flipped so the DW is on the right and the ledge + extra base is on the left.

Depending on your cabinets, a 15" or 18" base will fit under the ledge and be totally operational. Note that the walls between the larger and smaller bases will need trimming to allow the ledge to bridge the two. Typically people on here use the smaller base for a trash pullout with a utensil/knife drawer above the trash.

A 3 or 4 drawer stack would also work if you need to go with the 15" base. Some cabinets need to have a bit shaved off the top drawer to miss the underside of the ledge, although ours didn't (InnerMost). If you decide to do this, it's helpful to cut the hook for the accessories rack off the bottom of the sink just to get it out of the way. The accessories, of course, then need to go elsewhere than where Kohler planned.

OR

Go with the 48" base and install a trash pull out under the sink on the ledge side.The also necessitates putting the accessories elsewhere.

That makes sense. I'll just keep ledge above trash on left and dw on the right. I was hoping to use ledge for dish drying hand washables but it doesn't look like it'll work
