My key lime seedlings
Comments (6)I'm real fond of using a key lime in my sweet tea. It would be neat to have a cold hardy variant (I live in Tennessee) for this purpose. I found a Poncirus trifoliata naturalized in the woods with hundreds of seedlings all around it. Because of this I was wondering if anyone has attempted a cross between key lime and poncirus? I have some key lime seedlings coming up right now. About half are double zygotic the other half are single/clone. Will there be any difference between the two? Anyone have success growing key limes from seed and had them produce? How long between germination and flowering? As far as separation, I would wait at least nine weeks (I'm sure I will wait longer). I have a 15yr old citrus grown from seed- but it has never flowered (but it does get stressed every year...) I grew it in WELL composted bat guano (and I don't fertilize it- it's an overgrown citrus bonzai)...See Morewhat's wrong with my Mexican Key
Comments (11)Miss, this is root rot. Your tree is way to wet. I would suggest you re-pot it right away, to see if you can save it. Use a very well draining mix. What you're using is much too compact for citrus. Most container citrus folks on this list use the "511" mix. You can search the forum for the recipe, it is very easy. It works quite well. Once you start to see some recovery (new leaves starting to flush), be sure you fertilize your tree. Again, most of the container citrus folks on this forum prefer to use Dyna Gro's Foliage Pro, and will use it full strength with every watering, then 1/2 strength during the winter months. You will want your citrus trees to remain outside as long as possible. When temps start to threaten to drop below 32 degrees, it's time to bring in your container citrus. Container citrus will be more sensitive to cold temps that citrus trees in the ground because their roots are not as protected being in a pot. And, the Mexican lime is one of the least tolerant citrus of cold temps So, if your temps really are going to hit the high 30's, I would bring the tree in. You never know what YOUR temps will be, exactly, unless you have an outside thermometer or weather station and are tracking your temps, to compare to what the weatherman is telling you. Comments (10)It is most likely past root damage and potting it into a different mix so early in the season there which just set it back more.. Fertilizing while the roots are damaged is not a good thing either.. Therefore the lots of blossoms on twigs with no leaves..It has just enough energy to put out blooms but not to support leaves..Not enough energy to even hold on to leaves...I'll bet the blossoms are even half developed and open prematurely. It it were my tree, I would set in it good sunlight and I would not fertilize at all. If that is in a clay pot, I would watch that it doe snot dry out completely since a clay pot will dry it out even faster than a plastic one... Once you see any signs of leaf development, then fertilize and make sure to flush your mix once a month until you re pot it into a better mix once it gains strength.....See MoreLime comparison - key lime vs. "giant" key lime vs. limequat
Comments (17)Parker T - > just FYI - in my particular yards, I had conflicting scenarios (after dips to 18-19F) but have a different preference. I've "soured" on any cultivar with 'quat in its name; they are not as cold hardy as I had hoped. In Napa, the Eustis Limequat (on Volk) was killed to just about the graft - regrew and is now 10 ft. tall - took over a year. The Bearss lime just lost its leaves and refoliated, produced a huge crop right away. In Danville, the Bearrs lime was completely destroyed, the Volk rootstock lived. While the Eustis in my neighbor's yard was defoliated and came back. From what I've seen since, the Eustis fruit gets destroyed quickly when the temps go below freezing. The Bearss lime fruit can and has survived to 29/30F. So my vote is for the Bearss or Persian lime -because I want fruit! - far better for my climate's fall/winter dips below freezing. - George...See MoreLaura LaRosa (7b)
