Video Problem

I've got a problem watching videos, mostly from YouTube, on my laptop, that's started in the last 6 months or so.

Laptop is a refurb Dell Latitude D830, OS is Windows XP. I've had for about 3 years. I use it only for surfing and watching videos, don't store anything, have close to 90% free space.

Firefox is my browser.

Internet is DSL from my dialtone provider, a local co-op.

When I access a video, I switch to full screen, watch the progress bar and don't start watching until enough content is downloaded so I can watch without buffering. If a short video, less than 20 minutes, usually no problem. But if longer, at roughly the 20 minute mark, the picture will hang, and the audio will get garbled. If I stop the video and go back a minute or 2, all goes well for a while but inevitably the video gets jerky, the voice gets out of sync, so I go back to small mode which works fine. If I go back to full screen at the 35 or 40 minute mark a repeat. This also happens listening to music, which has virtually no video, only audio. I sometimes watch live streaming news, and other than a crappy picture because of crappy internet, no problems.

Is it my computer, internet, YouTube, anyone know?

Lets look at the internet speed,

Go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and click on Begin Test

When the Test finishes click on Share This Result and then select Forum then Copy then move to a reply and Ctrl + v

Because it starts out fine and degrades with time, I'm going to guess the problem is the PC.

This is a low end PC and it's old. Info from a Google search suggests that many D830s had slow microprocessors and an inadequate amount of RAM for the modern world.

To to Control Panel, System, and report back the Processor specs and amount of RAM.

How fast is your Internet connection? When you watch a video, what is actually happening is that the video file is being streamed (downloaded) to your computer. If you don't have a fast connection and/or if the video is higher quality (meaning a larger file size) then the file can't be downloaded fast enough. When it pauses, it is "buffering", which means that the rest of the video file is still donwnloading and that's why you can't watch it...it isn't there yet. There are two solutions: 1) get a faster Internet connection, or 2) hit the pause button at the beginning of the video and leave it paused for a minute or two so that more of the video file is downloaded and you can then watch it without it hesitating. When you pause most videos, you can see the progress of the download as a shaded bar that crawls across the bottom of the video window. You don't have to wait until the whole bar is shaded (meaning it's 100% downloaded): you just have to wait long enough so that the progress of the download stays ahead of the progression of the video. Does that make sense to you? The next time you want to watch a video, look closely at the bottom of the video window and you should see what I mean.

Skype is very easy to install and use. Once installed you would search for your contacts (ask them for the handle they use to make life easy) you then make contact. Be sure to add a personal note so they realise it is you and not some whacko wanting to pester. And yes, that happens occasionally but can be stopped, see next paragraph. Once installed click Tools and Options then on the Privacy tab make sure you are set to only receive calls from those you know and not any old stranger. While chatting you can send photos to each other or files if you wish. Do not use the desktop mic in front of the speakers because the sound coming from the speakers goes back into the mic a fraction of a second later and makes for a very lousy chat. Perhaps your camera will come with the mic included, if so that is great. Just set the camera on top of the monitor and that avoids all the cross sound. Don't add too much info on the personalising, I say I am near Niagara Falls, Canada rather than the small town not far away and I offer only my first name. Your choice of course. You will not be disappointed if you have family living any distance from you. You can also buy time to call landline telephones around the world. Last time I bought it was about US$14 (10 Euros) for 10 hours of talk time. not a bad deal.

You might get a better signal once they do the switch-over in February. For now (at least in my area) they are broadcasting the digital signals UHF. I have contacted one of the engineers at the CBS affiliate in Des Moines, and his email explains a lot. This was written this past summer: It's actually not an issue with signal strength, but rather many stations are using *different* channels at this time for broadcasting digital, than they will be after 2/17/09. For instance, we are presently broadcasting our digital signal on UHF channel 31, because our VHF channel 8 is still tied up being an analog transmitter until next February. A digital receiver will already call our digital channels by their "virtual" names of "8-1" and "8-2", once the receiver initially discovers the signal on channel 31. But, our signal won't be on "real" channel 8 until next February. Channels 5, 11, and 13 in Des Moines are doing similarly with temporary UHF channels, and plans to move their digital signals down onto their traditional VHF channels next February. Other stations are going to stay on their present digital UHF channels, and are effectively already done with the digital transistion, except they still haven't shut off their analog transmitters. But even though our UHF channel is temporary, we are still broadcasting it at full strength. It's legally maxed-out at a level that is intended to replicate the coverage area of analog channel 8. BUT, receiving our digital signal just as well as analog depends on having home UHF reception that's just as good as VHF reception. Admittedly, for many homes, this is not the case. Some people have VHF-only TV antennas. Sometimes, the little "UHF loop" on their indoor rabbit ears don't pick up as well as the longer VHF aerials. In my opinion, the best kind of antenna is still the good-old-fashioned rooftop-style VHF/UHF antenna. But, even if you have one of those, old antenna wire or old signal splitters may be preventing the higher-frequency UHF channels from carrying down to the TV set as well as the VHF signals do. And, finally, UHF sometimes doesn't do as good of a job of holding up over long distances and penetrating natural or man-made obstructions as VHF signals do. Therefore, even though we are transmitting digital at "full power", there are a number of reasons that some viewers may not receive the digital as well as analog, most of them related to poor UHF reception. Some people may experience improved digital reception after 2/17/09, if they haven't already taken steps to improve UHF reception by that time.

Did you know when you purchase a product it comes with a warranty. Not a guarantee. A warranty is to fix manufacturers defects and they have addressed all of your issues. Not trying to defend a online retailer but I don't see fault on their end. They drop shipped you a product you did all the research on and you picked it. Please explain how it is their fault? Dealers and manufacturers would go out of business if they swapped their defective products. Lemons happen and most of the times they don't. Think of appliances like cars. Okay, that's 2 GB (gigabytes) not GH (gigahertz) of RAM, and I think that's the problem - not enough RAM.

Many PCs (whose users who don't pay attention to such things) accumulate unnecessary memory resident agents/apps that load on boot-up that reduce that amount of RAM available for user initiated tasks. For PCs having an adequate amount of RAM it doesn't matter but on a machine with a small amount, any unneeded use by these items does make a difference. Examining and eliminating the unnecessary ones is easy and may allow slight improvement. If you'd like to be guided through doing that, post back.

Otherwise, your experience is what it is until you get an new PC. I wouldn't recommend putting more RAM into such an old machine.

Thanks. I'm considering cutting the cord and going to all internet. I'm in the boonies, and since TV went digital I'm on satellite. Too far for an antenna, signal was passable with analog. My ISP is doing major upgrades in advance of offering TV service over their land lines. Hopefully their internet will become more reliable also. I've been figuring it was time to upgrade on my side. Thanks again.

Good luck with that.

What's the Internet speed now?, since there doing up grades and you said this problem has surfaced only in the last 6 months that may be part of the problem too.

zep has a good comment, an erratic internet signal could be another culprit.

I have a netbook PC (very small) I use for traveling (it's great for that) that has similar specs to your PC, though it has Win 8. It can get bogged down with video signals, even at home with my >100 MB internet service.

That thought had entered my mind. They've been upgrading by sections,and got to my area late winter. Since they were replacing both equipment and cable, I figured there might be problems, but no, not while they were here. After they moved on is when the buggy video started.

If I call the office, I get horrible info. If I call the IT dept, they say there are no problems in my area and to replace the router. I'll probably go that route, there's no cost involved. I know from talking to others miles from me that the internet can be "erratic". I'm going to talk to my neighbors on my road and see what they have to say, see if I can talk to the one and only engineer who works for my provider, I've spoken with him in the past, a real nice guy, and take it slow before I dump Dish. Thanks.
