DVD/video problem

Windows XP...SP3...use Google Chrome...HP Computer

I recently had a new video card installed...this problem may not have anything to do with that, but I had to take my computer back four times for the tech to get it working properly...that is the only new thing I have recently installed. Everything seems to be working well...I thought that until I tried playing one of my Movie Maker DVD's and it wouldn't work...so I tried some of my others...none will now work and they worked before...(see enclosed error message)...do you think this is a problem with my new video card or something else...ATI Radeon HP 3600 Series graphics

You need to tell us your computer make and model

You need to find out by removing the side panel of your computer what size power supply you have in the computer. This video card requires a minimum of 400 watt power supply, see here and I am not too sure any factory built computer has that much power installed other then by upgrading.

Did he install DirectX 10.1?

A quick note to say that DVDflick worked. I got the video's made - just in a nick of time (bc. I have a full day conference tomorrow). Now my daughter can bring her friend the videos (and scrapbook). DVDflick was amazingly easy compared to other things I tried. Once on the program, I printed the 6 page guide - which explained most of what I needed to know. Two things I had to figure out myself - and am posting here for others who may try this. 1 - on the Configure your Project tab, there are settings for video. If you want to change the resolution/file size (as I did to fit a 45 minute video on a standard dvd), you can adjust the bit rate). 2 - I would recommend on the burning settings (also under configure your project tab), choose to have it burn it to dvd, and verify, and eject. The first dvd I made I only selected burn it and verify. It burned it - ejected, reinserted and played it. But then the dvd tray was locked and couldn't be opened. This is somewhat frequent occurence with disc burning software - which wants to prevent you from accidentally opening the tray before it's done. The only way I could open the tray was to shut the computer, and hit the open disk tray button as it was rebooting. The next video I made, I selected eject when done - and it ejected it. For a while I thought the tray was broken - and tried the usual methods to release - like the paper clip in the tiny hole near the tray. And going to my computer, d:, eject disk. Nothing worked bc. the software was preventing it. Once my disk was ejected - and the software closed, the open and close tray works fine with other programs. Thanks so much. This was a great program. Just curious if convertxtodvd would get me additional features. I can see burning many dvd's for people (we seem to be the videographers of many social gatherings and I'd like to give dvd's to people who were part of the plans). DVDflick worked great - but I don't mind paying a little if it gets me more features. Any thoughts? Thanks so much. You saved me. Lynn.

Andy, I did a major photo project last fall putting photos onto DVD. Haven't yet worked with video but opened up my Roxio last night and gave it a shot. Please ignore anything that is not applicable to your situation. First thing I learned is to change my screen size to 1024 by 768 before loading Roxio. After loading you'll see a series of dropdown menus on the left side. Select Vido. Then on the center section of the screen select QUICK VIDEO WITH MYDVD EXPRESS. It'll take a minute or so for the components to load. Then you'll have a page come up showing a MENU for your video. You can use that one or select another by clicking on the options on the left side of the page. The video menu permits you to enter your choice of words. Then down at the bottom of the page click NEXT. You'll need to Browse to find the video you want to transfer. Don't know if you can get it from another source and if that is a problem, I'd load the video to my computer to make the transfer simplier. Anyway, click on the video and then click on the button ADD. If you want more than one video, hold down the control key and select the multiples you want. Finishing that, you'll get a page asking what you want to do. At the top is BURN TO DISK (or something like that - I'm working from memory) Got your DVD burner all set up, then go to it. JVC model XV-S500, DVD player Disks play, but video goes black for a few seconds and then returns. This occurs randomly and for different lengths of time during playback Audio does not stop; and when the video resumes it is clear and sharp. On the top or side of the case there is a code on the HP label that ends with #ABA what are the 7 digits before this?

In the original post you wrote this - "ATI Radeon HP 3600 Series graphics" - you meant HD and not HP, correct?

How wide or high is the computer case? I am trying to determine if you have a small form factor (about 4 inches high or wide, or the standard case about 7 inches wide.

I do not think Belarc provides the power supply figures so you are going to have to open the case. If it is a small form factor case there are 2 buttons near the front, one on each side. Depress these and draw the cover towards you. The power supply is clearly visible in the rear left corner with the label on top. If it is a standard case there will be possibly 2 screws at the back holding the side panel on, remove these, slide the panel forward and off. The power supply will be up top at the back of the case with the label visible on the side. either way we need the output watts please.

Either remove the power cord from the rear while doing this or keep your fingers out of the interior.

OK I now think you have the dc7700p "convertible minitower" using the HP jargon.

Look here and scroll well down the page to a 4 column boxed table, yours is the right hand column. About a third of the way down it shows the power supply size which is 365 watts. You'll also notice they offer a 365 watt PLUS 80, not sure what this is but it likely is a better quality piece for computers with heavier power demands. No more wattage available but a heavy duty supply - better quality.

ATI state the video card requires a minimum of 400 watts, meaning a 450 watt or higher would be preferred. And not a cheapie low end power supply.

I don't mean to bad mouth your tech but it seems odd that you have had to haul this machine back there so often for a basic fault he might have created. Upscale video cards are power hungry. Video cards are big business and can cost plenty and I would think every tech would be well informed about them and their power needs.

Was there a particular aim to buying this upscale card? I ask because you have a professional quality business machine and generally they do not lend themselves to being upgraded to gaming computers.

Ouch! Sorry if I upset the grand kids.

That is probably the wise choice because you may have spent another $60 to $80 for a better power supply that is still going in an older machine. Too often they become obsolete by the time you look for a new computer.

Just today while rebuilding/modifying my main machine but keeping most parts to run the second one I had the very same issue. I have a couple of power supplies hanging around here but on inspection neither is good enough for either computer so I have just spent $80 plus tax on yet another power supply.

Upgrading is a challenge at times and often not worth the effort.
