Anything I can do for my Japanese Plum to keep it warm tonight?
Comments (1)Most effective is a cover and heat source. But at 32F for a short time there shouldn't be damage. Here is a link that might be useful: illustrated spring frost thresholds...See MoreIntegrated Warming Drawers - Do they have humidity Control?
Comments (3)Until recently the Miele warming drawers had a knob that could be moved from one position to another which would allow the drawer to vented for a warm "dry" environment, or closed for a warm "moist" environment. It now looks as though the newest models come with new touch panel controls, with no settings for dry or moist environments. I'm not sure if this is an improvement or not. My Miele warming drawers were the older type. I never adjusted the vent, always maintaining the "dry" environment setting, regardless of what was in the drawer. If I was just warming plates, this was the perfect environment, if I was keeping food hot and didn't want something to dry out, I simply covered the dish or platter loosely with foil, and all would be well. For keeping things like waffles and toast warm, a dryer environment is better for maintaining crispness. For things like a casserole or resting meat, where a moist environment is desirable, I simply drape a loose piece of foil over the dish, and all keeps to perfection. I have to admit, though, I seldom use my warming drawers for keeping foods hot for any length of time. I use the drawers mostly for warming serving platters, bowls and dinner plates, or for letting meats rest after cooking while I finish up vegetables and side dishes. Warming drawers allow me to cook at a more leisurely pace because I'm not locked into getting main dishes and side dishes finished and ready to serve at the exact same moment. I can finish the main course first, then complete the side dishes a few minutes later in a more relaxed fashion. In my opinion, that's the real benefit of having warming drawers....See MoreSoil Temperatures Are So Nice And Warm!
Comments (8)The lack of rainfall so far concerns me a great deal too. Our 2016 rainfall in my county is less than 20% of average. Things would be worse here except that in 2015 we had our rainiest year ever, beating the previous record year by almost 20". Thus, we have great soil moisture levels still. I wonder how long that lasts if rain doesn't start falling soon. For those of you who are not yet OK Mesonet addicts, here is the 2016 year-to-date rainfall map. 2016 Year To Date Total Rainfall Recorded at Mesonet Stations And, here's a map that shows in color coding, the approximate percentage of annual rainfall received so far in 2016: 2016 Rainfall As A Percentage of Normal The combination of low rainfall and above average temperatures makes me uneasy. I know what that sort of weather can lead to really quickly. If I stop being cautious and start rushing warm-season plants into the ground, it will be because our 2016 weather is uncomfortably following in the path of 2011, when we first hit the 90s here the week of Easter, at the same time I was trying to get my tomato plants into the ground. By May, the heat was here to stay. It makes me crazy to see so many similarities between this year and that year. I do not want for 2011 to be the analog year that best matches 2016. The year is young and anything can happen, but I am watching the weather like a hawk and not especially liking the trends observed so far. As a gardener, it is thrilling to have an early warm-up, but we all know that too much warmth too early also might be a sign that a rough summer lies ahead....See MoreHigh humidity and warm temps bring out the best colors
Comments (6)Thanks Nancy. Things are finally going. Seems a bit later than usual but enjoying some great blooms. Some of my most reliable blooms are slow this year. JJ Divine just had its first blooms open and I haven't seen (cursory glances) a single Dwarf Singapore Pink inflo on any of the 150 tips on that plant. I might need to relocate it to more sun. Working an issue with some leaf hopper type insects. Using neem oil only because we have such a nice assortment of butterflies, fireflies, honey bees, ladybugs, and other beneficials. I found these two guys out there yesterday. So I treated only plants outside of a 5 ft. radius from them. Hopefully this will drive the leaf hoppers into a amphibious ambush. Also been moving some lizards into the patch to help. Never had to deal with this type of insect before so we will see what works....See Moreadellabedella_usa
