Favorite and least favorite color/type of hosta
Comments (27)I got to "thinking" further and realize I have sort of done that very thing, just not stacking the barrels on top of the other. I have a two tiered corner bed, where I have some barrels and hosta at differing levels, and so on and it works for me! Here's that corner, the subject of many pics. I have taken! In this one, you don't see my current situation where I put a barrel in place of the smaller and whiter pot to the right and another one down and behind the Lady Isobel Barnett on the same right! I did this at the end of the season with some of the many barrels I purchased on clearance! And another example of "tiering": I love the effect of higher and lower hosta placements! I think it gives the best views of some of those vase-shapes, especially, to be up high so you can truly appreciate their uprightness! I think it also gives a depth and dimension to the garden not easily achieved by one-level plantings! I'm done now--for awhile--back to the rest of you!! :o) Janice PS Note the "Sugar and Cream" (white margined, but lighter green--shhhhh--don't tell! I'm not suppose to like the white margins!)...See MoreWhat is YOUR Favorite (and least favorite) Lettuce?
Comments (8)I'm growing greens in large stock tanks this year on a deck, so can get some free from slug and vole predations for the first time. The lettuces are perhaps too crowded to form big heads, the arugula and the baby bok choy is bolting. An unusual green I'm enjoying is Brassica juncea, Ruby Streak and Golden Frill, from Evergreen seeds. The Ruby Streak is bolting, but the Golden Frill is larger and not bolting yet. It is making long leaves with lots of frill, finely divided, so it is quite crisp, yet still tender. I'm going to have to keep trying on the lettuce. I've found that some greens like Wild Red Kale, and turnips left in the ground for spring greens, need to be planted by July 15 in order to get large enough to make it through the winter. I had some excellent bok choy one year planted in the fall, but can't seem to duplicate it. It won't make it during the winter, though. A wild green I enjoyed up until frost last year and in early spring this year is Sheep Sorrel, for a sour lemony taste....See MoreMy new favorite bloom! (This week, at least)
Comments (21)Thanks K, Joan, no-clue, I appreciate the kind words. K, I think you're right--and you've just given us another justification that we can use the next time we spend money on a tree that isn't in our budget or (in my case) have zero room for. I spent a lot of time around my trees this weekend, outside, enjoying the glorious weather we've been having. Sun all day--and the inflos are developing nicely, while my anticipation builds. Lilikoi's inflo is as tall as the rest of the plant (almost). This tree, to me, has a "far-East" look to it: I cannot wait to see this tree bloom. As my collection has grown and I've been lucky enough to have a number of inflos now, my love for the beauty of these trees just keeps growing. I realize now that each inflo is unique, and always evolving. What makes an inflo so incredible, to me, is that it's like an architecture--each inflo is a 3-D space that light filters through. At sunset the inflos light up like candelabras, and it is stunning. Julie Moragne Teresa W white noID Cal Sunset in foreground, Kona Candy in background Celadine A weekend well-spent! Comments (11)OMG, Robotropolis! I didn't know! OMG!! I think my favorite TV kitchen was The Galloping Gourmet, and mostly because they showed the audience instead of pretending it wasn't a set. Agreed with Gr8day that Ina Garten's TV kitchen is nice. It's efficient and pleasant rather than goopy and weird (some TV kitchens look like the kitchens in flooring ads--all about showing the center rather than actually cooking)....See More- 7 years ago
