misting system for cuttings

Years ago, it was suggested that I try a misting system for rooting cuttings. My husband built me one and we added a basic timer so I didn't over stress remember to turn it off and on.

I've tried ziplock bags, plastic bottles and so much more but this method really worked for me.

The misting system he made for me was made out of PVC pipe and those mist attachments. It's one of the best gifts a girl could get! Once I figured out how often to mist & for how long my cuttings seemed to thrive.

Has anyone else used this method?

Yes I agree it is the best thing a girl can get. I also use a similar system made of pvc pipe with misters attached. I have it set over a plastic tote with a pump attached to my mister thing. I bought an intermittent timer, and set it to come on every two hours. (Oops hit the wrong key)

for five seconds. I need to get it set up pretty soon. Are you doing cuttings now? What kind of soil have you been using? I agree the success rate is much better with a mister. Do you have a picture of your setup?

You can also get misting systems created for raising poison dart frogs. That's what I use for my orchids.

I just called my HVAC supplier and they carry solid spray, 80 degree nozzles and they are rated for 1/2 gallon per hour and up. I'm going to try a 2 gallon per hour first.These ratings are based on 100psi. The nozzles are built of stainless steel and brass so they should last a while. The price is $5.00 each. Remember, I'm in Canada and prices are usually higher than in the USA

once a cutting is prepared & the rooting hormone is applied then...... it is stuck in a well drained soil mix. the mist is applied to the leaves several times a day.. can be a eleberate set up or simpley a old windex bottle used to spray water. a warm soil 65-70F also speeds up the rooting process...... roots will form in the soil & once that is done can stop misting the cuttings. Reamber the plant can only get water through its roots & not through the leaf or stem.....

I have heard that enclosing the cuttings in a 'tent' of plastic and putting a household electric vaporizer in with the cuttings works OK. I have not tried it yet myself.

Hi Carlotaroser,
I am trying to save a rose tree that i moved. I dug it out and put it in a water with supertrhive for 30 min and then put it back in a ground two weeks ago and nothing looks good. I read one of your comment just now where you suggested to keep it in a water with superthrive until i see a new growth. so i should keep it in a bucket for days? please advice, I will really appreciate it. Dianne, a quick web search and I found this: http://www.mistking.com/Starter-Misting-System-v4-MKMSS-125-50.html, which is similar to what I have. It's basically just a pump with tubing and spray nozzles, and a timer. You can find it at various terrarium supply or reptile supply web sites. There's also this on GardenWeb for orchids http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1603931/misting-systems. I hope this helps.

I raise a lot of roses from cuttings and guess the humidity is adequate here, because a high proportion of them root without doing anything to add humidity. In fact most times I've tried a method to raise humidity it caused more rot. I live in NC, a moderately humid place. For me the trickiest thing is getting the right location in terms of light. Not too much sun, or the cuttings cook. Not too little , or they don't get enough sustaining sun and decline. I suppose a misting system might allow you to put cuttings in more light and keep them cooler at the same time.

I usually do cuttings in baggies under shoplights in the basement. Getting the right amount of light is one reason. The other is that few cuttings are large enough by fall to make it outside their first winter in my climate.
