Misting system

Hey all,

Well I just purchased a misting system from lowes...I am so happy my watering days are over lol....well have to tweek it just right now.....I paid $30 for the kit...I know O probally could of put it together for cheaper but I wasnt too sure what I would need to get...anyways I have enough misting heads left to do my flower beds in front...just have to pick up a few of the other components...I believe it will cut back drastically on the amount of water I use....because of right now it seems it only needs to be on for about 2 min every several hours...but I proballyt will need to water maybe 5 min when it gets really hot....hopefully it will cut down on the temperature which has been around 100 in the greenhouse....but the plants couldn't be happier lol....

That sounds great. Did this include the timer? Even if not it was a good price. What brand was it? I could use another 2 or 3 for my hosta beds.
You will see the temp go down at least 5 degrees when the misters are on.

no timer bought a four a day one for 38 bucks I am so happy over such a small thing lol

I chose Slackware because I've used it for most of about 15 years. Once its set up, I don't usually have to fool with it. (That said, once I plugged in my x10 module and started switching the solenoid on and off, I'd not be able to get into the system. I believe it was still operational, but there is apparently some memory leak in the usb system or the x10 application that makes it so that I can't connect. As a result, I've set the Raspberry Pi to reboot every 3 days-ish. I'll let it run like this until I have time to replace the x10 part of the system with a PiFace module I've bought and not had time to dive into. Also, I've had 900+ days of uptime on (a different box running) Slackware before, so I'm confident the problem is in one of the programs in use.) It turns out that I got started too late in the year to have much success, ...and when I did try, I'd set myself up for failure by going out of town the VERY NEXT morning after I'd set this up. Alas, my neighbor who was checking in on things missed the instruction for this system so... I've iterated away from the spray tank and its need of constant filling and pressurization. I've connected garden hose to the solenoid w/ a connector that can be had @ Lowes (garden hose to pipe thread). Its now truly set and forget. I'm able to access the device remotely via ssh anywhere I have internet. Its also set as a webserver, but I don't have current data being displayed any longer. I was graphing temperature and humidity in my greenhouse as well as the closest weather station. It wouldn't be hard to build some sort of webpage to control it, but that's not exactly my strength (...but might make an interesting project). As far as calibration, I spent about 2 weeks calibrating it. Its "offness" wasn't linear and the output from the tool provided by the author of the software didn't seem to handle it much better. In an effort to get a usable product, I've scrapped the temperature/humidity sensor controlled parts until such time as I can get better data from them. (This might mean new sensors, or more refinement in calibration.) The system is now only using time as input into when it should mist. I think its set for 10 seconds every 2 hours at present. I managed to get a few Japanese Maple, Juniper, and Crabapple cuttings to root, and I've got a flat of ~90-ish gardenias under mist right now. Hopefully next year I can get started early and in earnest ...and really put this system through its paces. My primary concern is in the finding of interesting stock to root. Also, if a copy of any of Dirr's propagation manuals comes around I might see about acquiring it. I still need to contain the guts of this system in a project box of some sort for a few different reasons. If I can find the time, I may build out benches for my greenhouse ...and see about installing a heating cable.

I have setup something very simple, even I can do this. What you need is a bed with a cover (four corrugated iron sheets and a see through roofing sheet you'll get both for free). Then you need a timer. You take care of the minimum time the timer can do, because not all timers can do times like 10 seconds some start with a minute. The timer works with batteries. At the tap you mount the timer, then either a piece of hose or a black plastic pipe for irrigation into you bed. There are misting valves, which are inexpensive and come in packs of 10. If you do cuttings you buy risers too which are little plastic tubes. All what you do is you push the risers into the polypipe and mount the sprinkler on top of it. Before you do that you get some sticks and thin wire. I place the sticks in the beds were I want the sprinkles and fix the polypipe to it. If the risers are a bit crooked I can fix them to the sticks. This way you can move your sprinklers around a bit. And don't forget and end cap for the polypipe.

I was trying to think of pros and cons for certain locations - not everyone will want to walk directly under mister when going from the house to the seating area through the sliding glass doors. Maybe place around Gazebo and along the parallel wall of the house? Is the table area too large to get much benefit if only on 2 short sides. Is it better to do just the Gazebo area as the "Cool Zone" Issues with it being too close to the grill?

We just put together our HFGH and now John has decided to do extras on it. We have louvers installed and automatic openers (heat sensative) and now he wants to install a mister system for it. He's not a gardner, but I am getting him to be one without him even knowing it. I need as much info as possible on a misting system. Steve, if you can provide more info, pics or adivse I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to go your route, with a home made mister system.

If anyone else has suggestions please provide too!!

I used the Toro misting system from HD. They have kits or you buy the indivdual parts like I did and make up your own. It was very inexpensive. The timer cost the most. But a lot cheaper than the digital ones.
I use mine just for cooling. But I plan on adding a second line for watering or just adding more misters and running them for a longer period of time. My greenhouse is not set up like a production GH so it's harder to set up the watering system.
This is some I have set up by the pool to cool the air. I hang it from the gazebo. Feels great on a hot day.

I've got mine set up at one end and my high mounted exhaust fan at the other for evaporative cooling during the summer. I'm going to get a sprinkler system valve and hook it up so that when the thermostat trips the fan it will also turn on the mister during the summer.

I set it up with two over head misters......I then ran a line on both sides half way up the wall...and used one mister pointing up on all the walls except the back wall where I have two or three....I run it for 2-3 minutes 4 times a day and seems to be watering great...When the temps rise I may go for 5 minutes...I water at 4:30Am, 9:30Am,2:30PM and 6:00pm....all babies are happy lol...and it seems to lower my inside temps...although it hasnt been too hot here I havent had the vents open much...and all plants are just chipper
