Kitchen Remodel Layout Help Please
Comments (6)I don't care for the fridge stuck perpendicular on the end of that run. You're creating a cave with unusable space in the corner, top and bottom. Top could be an appliance garage, but you're not really gaining anything. I'd put the pantry to the right, then the fridge. As for the bump-out, I think it's too deep to put a whole row of cabinets in front of the bump-out. If you are raising the window anyway, how do you feel about setting the sink and DW into the bay, then having a diagonal counter for prep space between the sink and range? The trash pull-out could be set on the diagonal, too, with voided space behind the cabinet faces. You might even have space for a narrow slot for cutting boards beside the range. The sink is off-center to the window, so the faucet is centered to help disguise the asymmetry. A couple of other issues: With no upper cabinets adjacent to the range hood, it should be 6" wider than the cooktop, to provide a wider capture area for steam and grease. Secondly, the passage between the island and stub wall should be at least 36". I redrew the island a few inches narrower, with the 5th seat on the short side--8' will be sufficient for 4 seats. The aisle between the island and perimeter should be a minimum of 42", so setting the sink run back into the bay will help with that. You have extra space in front of the fridge run, so that counter could be made extra-deep to match the depth of a standard fridge box (30"). NKBA guidelines New to Kitchens? Read me first. Comments (24)I puzzled over your kitchen and I was struck at just how big it is. I checked the dimensions you wrote several times to make sure. I seems like the allocation of space in your original layout is pretty inefficient. Just for fun I did a rough layout showing what it might be like if your garage door moved and your kitchen and nook swapped places. This might be way out of budget. Also, there's no mudroom type situation near the garage. Basically I was trying to make your nook more of an extension of your family room to the left. (The little white circle is to represent a 40" round dining table.) If you could add a window to the left side of the house I might look closer at a layout that places the clean up sink on the exterior wall, but I imagine it would be nice facing the foyer. Again, posting this just for fun and throwing out ideas you may not have considered yet......See MoreHelp with kitchen layout remodeling
Comments (4)Sabrina is correct. What about the current layout isn't working? If you are content with the layout and just want to improve what you have, you could install pendant lighting over the island, and change the center light fixture for something upgraded and coordinating with the pentants. And you could add some can lighting. You could paint the window wall the same dark blue as the other walls to make it recede and show off the view. You could upgrade your window treatment. You could install contemporary-style corbels under some of your upper cabinets, specifically, the ones near the outside of a run like the one near the peninsula and the one on the left, closest to the table. You could install under-cabinet lighting if you don't have it already. You could install a lighting strip and remove your many outlet and switch covers. Or you could match them with the wall color (on the peninsula especially). If you want to replace existing cabinetry and like the current floorplan, you could choose slab style and take them to the ceiling....See MoreNeed help with Kitchen Layout/Design for a gut remodel job - thanks!
Comments (7)Thanks @AnnKH - good questions... What I disliked about the kitchen before was it was a galley type kitchen but with an island that literally felt like it blocked the fridge and sink for me. I used to hit my hip on the island countertop all the time to reach the sink and it was super annoying. So I'd like an open layout this time and have one large island with the sink in it so I have a simple triangle or oven, sink and fridge with nothing in between. I like the idea of putting dishes away easily and having the fridge and sink near each other too. The kitchen did feel dark but we already took down the wall to the family so there's a 13' opening and the family room is flooded with light. We also opened up the hallway to the living room to get light from there too. I'm not sure adding another window would do much b/c that side of the house just doesn't get as much light. I would definitely love a breakfast nook because it was awkward to make our food and then take everything to the dining room. I love separate dining for formal events...but I want casual dining for everyday. That way if someone wants ketchup, they can just pop up and grab it!...See MoreG G
