Rose of sharon not setting buds

I planted 3 violet satin rose of sharons last year. When I got them from the nursery they all had buds in them - they opened out and bloomed. By the end of last year it was about 2 ft high.

Last fall, my landscaper decided to prune it to about a little less than a foot. This year the shrubs leafed out well and only one of them is setting buds, that too a handful of them. The other two have 0 buds so far.

Can I do anything to get them to bud? 2 of them are in full sun and third one gets about 3 hours sun total. I am in zone 6A MA.

If the gardener pruned them at the wrong time he might've pruned off the branches that would've bloomed

Just wait they decide to bloom when they are ready, feeding them will not hurt. Right now I have 5 different ones 2 doubles and 3 singles and they bloom when they get ready. The rains we have been getting lately have kicked them up and they are blooming once again. My single purple seems to bloom all summer long. I lived in West Virginia for a year and they are even hardy there.

did you have a long cold spring??? i wouldn't bother 'pruning' off late lush growth ... hit by frost ... let them fall off by themselves ... in my opinion ... BTW ... a quick google of ROS .... says you are pushing the zone in z4 ... good luck with it ... ken

Hi; I grow a Rose of Sharon, but am not an expert. Is this particular tree getting enough sun, and enough water? Also, based on what I've read on the the forums Mexicanhat suggested, they probably want monthly fertilizing to bloom to their best. I'd just do a search within those forums; RoS seems to get discussed extensively. Good luck! Lara

sometimes I have nothing better to do than think up questions like this ====>>> i think you kinda summed it up yourself.. lol ... ROS NEED NOTHING FROM YOU>> EVER >>> until it gets too big.. and you run it over with your truck or car ... and then it grows back ... or.. you get rid of it ... due to all the seedlings .... unless this one is barren .. now get back to work on important things in the garden .. lol ken

Cal, Rose of sharon don't grow like your tree. It was staked and pruned to grow like that, it is a bush, not a tree really. By staking it like that, you are encouraging it to be weak, it has support and it has to learn to grow the strength to stand by itself. Take all the stakes out from around it. It's too big to be staked like that. Let it stand on its own as soon as possible. If the flowers droop let them droop. As soon as the heavy winds are over, unstake that bush and leave it alone. DONT FERTILIZE it til next year if you have to. Hopefully it will root in fast for you, and mulch it good in the winter. Nurseries fertilize the shrubs to the point of ruining them so that they grow tall fast, but the growth is weak rather than strong if it had grown on its own. So give it a couple of years with no fertilizer at all.
